Bloodlines wreak havoc for the Tahs – Monday News – Rd 4 vs Easts (Day 1)

The TravelSim Manly Warringah Waratahs had a good showing on Saturday against a solid Easts club, showing some good determination with the bat to come back at the death in a number of grades, while also providing some disciplined bowling performances to restrict Easts to modest totals in the top 2 grades.

With the 3 lower grade teams all batting and the top 2 teams bowling, it was a little bit of a mixed bag but ultimately the day was a success. 1st grade restricted Easts to 258 on another fantastic Manly batting deck, Ahillen Beadle again the star with the ball taking 4 wickets, with Nick McLachlan and Mickey Edwards the other multiple wicket takers. 2nd grade experienced a very slow day with Easts crawling to 9 for 194 off 93 overs before the captain declaring and the Waratahs finishing on 0 for 10 at the end of play. 3rd grade are the only team struggling after a terrible batting display saw us bundled out for 104, with Easts already gaining 1st innings points. 4’s experienced an up and down day before a debut century from Zach Trewartha turned things around to end with 245, while Tom Kelly held the 5th grade innings together with a patient 96 before the Tahs finished 8 for 254.

4 Pines P4 Pines Logolayer of the Week – Zach Trewartha

Commonly known as “Son of God” because of his immaculate cricketing bloodlines (as well as the fact that his birthday is actually on the 25th December) Zach Trewartha showed that he is an all-rounder of the future with a hard hitting 102* in Saturday’s 4th grade clash. With the side struggling at 7 for 100, Zach combined with Will Outred for a game changing partnership before rocketing to his hundred with the support of the number 10 and 11. His hundred came off 70 rocks and included 4 lost balls. For a youngster of his small stature, Zach can hit the ball a very long way.

It was Zach’s debut hundred for the Waratahs and actually his first ever hundred, and it was done in back to the wall circumstances against a good side. The only downside was that his dad (God himself) Ross Trewartha was unavailable this round and so did not see his son’s innings.

1st Grade – Manly 0 for 4 vs Easts 10 for 258 (A. Beadle 4 for 57, M. Edwards 3 for 51)

The 1st grade team arrived at the picturesque Manly oval and begun with a warm up game of soccer. Inside out shirts won quite convincingly with Peter Crouch (Mickey Edwards) a big presence in the box.

The Easts captain won the toss and he decided they were going to have a bat. The pitch looked good and turned out to have a bit more carry than recent pitches although Adam Crosthwaite described it as ‘Tennis Bally”. Nic Bills got our first scalp with the brother of English test opener chopping one back on to his stumps. Easts then put together a little partnership with both batsman getting a start before Mickey Edwards found an edge and 2013’s Cleo Bachelor of the year took an easy catch.

Nick McLachlan bowled a consistent spell through the back end of the first session and early second session, accounting for the big wicket of Moran. Ahillen Beadle got their set batsman out with a patient and skillful spell to have them 4-100. James Munting started to get the ball to reverse swing and whispered a sarcastic encouragement to the Batsmen, Munter was unlucky not to pick up a wicket in the middle session.

A good partnership built between Clarence (100) and Piolet (40) which Mickey ended in a fiery and impressive spell bowling the latter. The Manly boys slowly chipped away from the other end with Clarence batting quite well and eventually got into the lower order, which Ahillen Beadle accounted for well. Easts all out for 258 on a pitch that flattened out to be a good batting wicket was a true reflection of the way the boys stuck at it in the field and with the ball.

Aidan Baker and Nic Bills negotiated the 2 overs before stumps without disappointment and will resume our chase of Easts total next Saturday.

Go Manly. XoXo

2nd Grade – Manly 0/10 vs Easts 9 dec/194 (N. McCallum-Toomey 2 for 32, L Grant 2 for 36, D. Marshall 2/45)

Second Grade turned up to Waverley ready to take on Easts. After losing the toss, we were in the field looking for early wickets among other things (Nick McCallum-Toomey was searching for a park, while Dylan Marshall was on the lookout for an RTA to renew his car rego). Michael Visser (1-30) and Nick (2-32) opened up and set the trend for the day. Both of the boys built pressure and bowled consistent maidens. Before their first spells were done, each had a much deserved wicket. 2 for 40. The skipper then turned to Luke Grant (2 for 36) and Mitchell Pugh (1 for 15) who continued the good work. LG picked up the third wicket before Dylan (2 for 45) came on and bowled a terrific spell which saw him claim 2 crucial wickets. We had Easts up against the ropes at 5 for 75. Ryan Farrell (1 for 26) and Sam Gainsford (0 for 3) also bowled extremely well either side of the tea break.

It didn’t seem to matter who was bowling, the pressure was always on. Easts battled all day and never really managed to get their run rate over 1.5. I think the stat that sums up the day best is that we managed to bowl 32 maidens in the innings! A phenominal effort on a flat deck. Although the 9th wicket managed to add just over 50 and put us under pressure, it was all Manly on day 1. Easts 9 for 194 before an early declaration. Hats off to the bowling group for bouncing back after a disappointing game last week.

Jarrod Rawlings and Adam Gummer then managed to survive a tough 9 over perios without being troubled. The good guys are 0 for 10 and on the hunt for 6 points.

Luke Grant

3rd Grade – Manly 10/104 (J. Daly 31, W. Evans 27*) vs Easts 6 for 117 (B. Falconer 2/23, J Badyari 2 for 31)

A disappointing day, all out for 104 after winning the toss on a grassy, hard wicket. Certainly no demons in it. Cole (0) got a rough one early to be adjudged caught behind, Sam (7) looked good and just as the opener was tiring he flashed at one, Tom (4) missed a straight one as did Jake (2) making his 3rd grade debut. Javed was patient and his eyes lit up with the tasty short one outside off only to find deep point to make it 5/29.

Boyer (14) and Daly (31 batting at 3) looked promising only for jimmy to miss a straight one as well. Evans (27no) was hopeful of a long partnership but Jordan edged to slip to make it 7/61. Ron (2) did similar for 8/65. Falconer (2) also edged to spinner to make it 9/83. Sam Alexander batted for 29 mins and looked good before trying to squirt one once too often to be all out for a paltry 104. Credit to easts as they bowled well and fielded brilliantly.

Falcs (2/23) got one through early, Ron (1/15) did as well to make them 2/5. Pressure not quite relentless enough from us and a strong partnership took the game away before Javed (2/31) took two quick ones to make it 4/56. Loose bowling then followed allowing Easts easy runs and get to 99 before Falcs and Evans (1/7) got two quick ones. Their batsmen though ensured a strong first day for them by sniffing out any meagre chance we had to get the 6 points and finish at 6/117 from the 29 we had to bowl..

Our worst 3 overs cost 40 runs, our worst 5, 56 runs. Enough said. Strip those back to something more in keeping with what was required and Easts may have struggled. 29 overs for 117, take out the bad 3 and we have 26 overs for 77 or 24 overs for 61. We need to get rid of this element from our game.

Hopefully Easts look to make a game of it with an immediate declaration as we will make sure both teams have a chance to get points.

4th Grade – Manly 10/245 (Z Trewartha 101*, W. Outred 42, B. D’Arcy 38) vs Easts 0 for 4

4th grade arrived to Trumper oval and were greeted with a beautiful deck for batting on. A bit later on, Joe Graham walked in more than half an hour late, disappointing his team mates.

Captain Josh Peterson won the toss and elected to bat. The boys got off to a good start and got themselves to 1/61 just after drinks. Unfortunately, the boys then lost 4/20. The wickets continued and the Tahs found themselves in the difficult position of 7/101 on a flat wicket.

Enter Zach Trewartha. Zack and Will Outred launched a fightback, both being really busy at the crease and ticking the scoreboard over. Will eventually fell for a well compiled 42, caught at mid-off. Then Zach, armed with the genetics of a cricketing god, batted like a prince for the rest of the afternoon. The ball was lost many a time as Zach tapped into his DNA and bombed the eastern suburbs bowlers to all parts. He brought up his 50 just after Will was dismissed. Ryan Bishop-Perrett and Josh Wigney ably supported him as he went to town on the oppositions captain who refused to take himself off, despite Zach bombing him for more than 10 an over consistently.

Zach brought up his first ton ever with a single down the ground and helped lead the boys to a competitive 245. His hundred came off well under 100 balls, in an innings that some described as ‘Like watching a right handed Ross Trewartha, only with better hair’. The boys should be up for it next week as we look to secure another 6 points and continue our early season charge.

5th Grade – Manly 8 for 254 (T. Kelly 96, A. Bariol 34) vs Easts

Overall a good day for the Manly 5th graders with same excellent, patient and grafting batting on a slow outfield getting the Tahs to 8 for 254. mason and Burgess opened up with Mason his typical agressive self, cutting and pulling well. However he went for one too many and was caught behind. Hamish Ferguson went 2 balls later to leave us at 2 for 30.

Tom Kelly came to the crease at number 4 and along with Max Burgess batted for most of the rest of the session. Both were very patient against some good accurate bowling until Max hit one to point for 23. Tulley came and went, as did Waddington just after tea. At 5 for 105 things weere looking rough however a great 74 run partnership between TK and Aiden Bariol settled things. Aiden batted like a seasoned star despite his tender age in racking up 34, while TK kept going along his merry way, as patient as ever.

When bariol was dismissed for 34 to a tough decision, TK unfortunatley held out for a fantastic 96. It was a great innings that deserved a hundred.

However there was still batting to do. Youngsters Joel Wood, Isaiah Vumbaca and Alex Bain all hit out and did well to take the Tahs to 8 for 254 at the end of the days play. Izzy was especially impressive, shacking off his small frame to hit a massive bomb from no where.

With a good bowling attack, slow deck, top class fielding from Easts and a very slow outfield due to some top dressing during the week, it was ultimatley a good day out for the Tahs. 6 points on offer next week if we bowl well enough.

Poidevin-Gray – Manly 7 for 168 (J. Daly 64no, S. Gainsford 28) Defeated St George 164 (M. Edwards 3 for 30, T. Beatty 2 for 41, D. Marshall 2 for 17)

PG’s arrived at the picturesque Manly Oval looking to make amends for a disappointing display against Northern Districts a few weeks ago. St. George won the toss and chose to bat on a wicket that was going to offer plenty for the spinners. Captain Taylor Beatty got the Tahs off to the start we needed having the opener caught at short cover before introducing Dylan Marshall into the attack. From this point Dylan put on an absolute spinners masterclass having the St. George batsmen in all-sorts as he continually turned the ball prodigiously. A pair of outstanding Jordan Daly run outs continued to put the pressure on the oppposition while Javed bowled well from the Sydney Road End, with spells from Sam Gainsford and Will Outred on debut also bowling well. Mickey and Taylor returned into the attack to knock-off the tail and restrict St. George to 164, a total that we planned to chase as fast as possible on what was becoming a slower and slower Manly Oval wicket.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go quite to plan with the bat to begin. Jarrod (8) knicked off early followed by Hole (6) who flashed at a wide one to make it 2/18 from the first 10 overs. Ryan then went in controversial fashion to make it 3/33 before Taylor and Jordan went about rebuilding the innings. Taylor was beginning to find some form before being run out leaving the Tahs realing at 4/50. The introduction of Sam Gainsford was once again a turning point with his attack and intent putting St. George on the back-foot. This was combined with Jordan’s composure who batted beautifully to guide Manly home. Gainsford departed with about 30 to win and after a few nervous moments with the wickets of Webber and Badyari, Will Outred hit the winning runs in the 45th over to seal a good win for the Manly Boys.

Once again, it was a complete performance with the ball and in the field, however it’s up to the top-order to step up in the next couple of rounds and lead the side.
Back to grade cricket for now!
Go Manly!
