After seven seasons leading the Mounties Manly Warringah Waratahs from the front, Jay Lenton has officially stepped down as Men’s 1st Grade Captain.
Jay’s decision comes following his recent appointment as an assistant coach with the NSW Blues. The added responsibilities at state level have made it difficult for him to commit the time and energy required to lead the Waratahs on a weekly basis.
While stepping aside from the captaincy, Jay will not be stepping away from the club. He remains a key part of our 1st Grade playing squad and will continue to have a significant influence both on and off the field. His experience, leadership and presence will be invaluable in supporting our incoming captain, who will be announced in the coming weeks.
Jay’s tenure as skipper has been nothing short of outstanding. Under his leadership, Manly made two 1st Grade Grand Finals and consistently set the standard in the NSW Premier Cricket competition. Last season, he was recognised as the SCA 1st Grade Captain of the Year — a fitting accolade for someone who has led with passion, humility and class. With those achievements, there is little doubt that Jay has nothing left to prove in the captaincy role.
Jay reflected on the decision in typically selfless fashion:
“This club means everything to me. It’s been home for such a long time, and to lead the boys over the last seven seasons has been one of the greatest honours of my cricketing life.”
”I’ve put everything I have into the role, and I’m proud of what we’ve built together.”
“With my new commitments to the Blues, I just can’t give the captaincy the time it truly deserves. But I’ll be doing everything I can to support our new skipper and the wider playing group.
”Whoever takes over is going to have a great bunch of men behind them, and I’ll be there to help whenever needed.”
“Most importantly, I’m still playing, and I can’t wait to rip in with the boys and chase another 1st Grade Premiership. That fire is still burning — and I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Everyone at the club thanks Jay for his incredible service as captain. We look forward to seeing him continue to lead by example in the seasons to come, both with bat and gloves in hand, and in the way only Jay can.
