Tah Talk with Jay Lenton – Girls brewing up something special

Welcome back to this weeks Tah Talk with Jay Lenton. This edition Jay gives an insight into the Brewer’s return to action, women’s fighting for back-to-back club championships, and a congrats to those involved with the Thunder on what was a great campaign.

Thanks again to Underground Cricket for partnering with this article each and every week. Great to have Damon, Jason and the team on-board. For all your cricket equipment needs visit them at www.undergroundcricket.com

GIRLS BREWING UP SOMETHING SPECIAL

After what seems an eternity, normal transmission resumes this weekend when our Brewer Shield (under-18s) side returns to action.

Before the long Christmas-New Year break, the girls were on fire after winning nine of 11 games.

That saw them move into second spot (from 14 teams) – just behind leader Gordon – and in with a strong chance of grabbing a home final on the back of a favourable draw.

Of course, there is always a danger momentum can be lost after such a long break.

But with the likes of Eve Burke, Keira Terrey and Matilda Brown developing nicely, the coaching staff is confident the young Tahs can pick up where they left off.

We’re particularly excited about where Keira’s season will finish, given she is so hungry for runs.

Go get ’em, girls!

CLUB CHAMPS IN SIGHT

It’s going to be a big fight to the finish in the race for the women’s club championship crown.

Manly and Sydney have been swapping positions over the last few weeks and we hoped we may have edged ahead after a clean sweep of results last weekend.

But some Sydney bonus-point wins has put them three points in front – 604 vs our 601.

It does not get much tighter than that as we strive for back-to-back club champs after winning last year for the first time.

It means every match will count as this title fight goes right down to the wire.

What a remarkable achievement it would be if we could pull off the double.

To think how far we’ve come with our women’s program in a relatively short time just blows the mind.

THUNDER STRUCK

It took an innings for the ages to bring Sydney Thunder undone in the BBL final.

As you have no doubt seen and read about, Mitch Owen single-handedly won the Hobart Hurricanes the title with a record-equalling ton at the top of the order.

I’ve been around T20 cricket for a long time and don’t think I’ve witnessed such a damaging knock in a big game.

It was sustained, clean hitting that was simply out of this world.

Can you just imagine Owen teeing off at Manly Oval? They’d be picking the Kookaburra up at Manly Wharf!

Anyway, there were three Manly men in Thunder colours who would not have enjoyed the onslaught.

But, still, a huge congratulations to Ollie Davies, Ryan Hadley and assistant coach Shawn Bradstreet for helping Thunder get as far as they did.

Remember, this was a club that finished last just 12 months ago.

Ollie had a few sickness and injury concerns throughout the BBL but hopefully he’s back on the mend and contributing to both NSW and Manly at the back-end of the season.

“Hads” would have loved more opportunities but should return to us nice and fresh in what we hope is a good few weeks with the new rock.

Shawn will now switch attention back to the NSW Sheffield Shield team as the Blues push for a grand final berth.

Well done to all on a great BBL campaign.
