Vale Bob Lind

It is with great sadness that we report of the passing of Bob Lind.

Bob has been battling numerous strands of cancer over the last few years but has been particularly sick of late. His passing was not unexpected.

Bob was a former Manly Warringah Waratah committee man and former 1st grade manager. Bob also had a lasting impact on many of Waratahs favourite names including Andrew Fraser, Shawn Bradstreet, and especially David Gainsford and Geoff Tucker. he made a great contribution to the Manly club over many years.

He was also a Life Member of the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association.

But it was at the Wakehurst Redbacks that he is loved more than anywhere. He was a co-founder and Life Member of the club.

Bob held the position of President at the Wakehurst Redbacks for 14 straight years from 87/88 to 00/01. He coached teams for many years and helped a number of players achieve higher levels including Jackson Bird (played tests for Australia and current Melbourne Stars player in the Big Bash) and Shawn Bradstreet (former NSW player and current head coach at the Manly Grade club). In the case of Jackson Bird, Bob had a big influence on Bird from the age of six until he was 16 during his days at the Wakehurst Redbacks junior cricket club and playing for Manly junior representative teams including Green Shield.

Bob founded the Wakehurst Redbacks Special Achievement Award at the club in the 84/85 season after a young Shawn Bradstreet (who was in Bob’s U13 Div 1 team at the time) had bowled figures of 8/0. He wanted a way to recognise this significant achievement and Shawn was the inaugural recipient. A couple of seasons back we were lucky to have Bob there to present this award in his name.

Our sympathies go to Bob’s family and all who knew and loved him.

Bob’s funeral will take place next Monday 2nd February at St Matthews Church at The Corso, Manly, starting at 11am. The wake will be held at Long Reef Golf Club. All are welcome to attend.

The below photo was taken only a few weeks ago when the great Brian Lara, after hearing that Bob was quick sick, popped in the say hello.
