4 Pines Player of the week – Jake Carden
This young fella is enjoying his first year in grade cricket. After a string of strong performances in Green Shield, Jake seems to have grown with confidence and, following on from his 59no last round, this week took 4/25 to ensure a low total to chase down, which they did easily to secure a bonus point win. Jake’s all-round capabilities are starting to shine and with plenty of hard work no doubt Jake will make his move through the grades over the coming years.
After losing the toss and being sent into the field, we bowled ok to roll Sydney Uni for 183. In hindsight this was probably more than they should have scored, however we were still confident of chasing it down. Nathan Buck bowled an excellent opening spell and ended with 1-37 off 10, however he deserved a few more. Bucky is hitting his straps at the right time of the season for us with the one day finals coming up in the next few weeks. Luke Edgell also made a triumphant return to the bowling crease taking 3-23 off 9 quality overs.
The less said about the batting the better. Let’s just say we did well to score 54 after being 9-17. Dan Babula was the star with a classy 25 at the bottom of the order. Whilst it was not an acceptable performance at all, the majority of batsmen got out trying to defend the ball, so it wasn’t as though we were throwing our wickets away with flashy shots. These things happen sometimes in cricket. Still, it was quite embarrassing and all the boys are keen to put things right this weekend.
As it turns out, we finished 3rd in the one day comp and play our quarter final next Sunday at Manly Oval against St George, who we also play on Saturday in day 1 of our two day clash. Should be a great weekend, it would be great to have as much support on the Sunday as possible.

Looking to defend 150 the bowlers had to bowl tight, full lines. Michael Visser and Mickey Edwards got us off to a top start, and as such, wickets began to fall at fairly regular intervals. But in the end it wasn’t enough as Sydney chased down our modest total. Hard day for the manly boys.

3rd Grade – Manly 199 (C. Little 56, S. Gainsford 35, M. Alexander 27no) lost to Sydney Uni 7/264 (A. Virdi 2/59)
Not one of our best performances. The day didn’t start well with a majority of the team rocking up late which was reflected in our poor warm up. We won the toss and sent Sydney Uni in to bat.
From the get go, Sydney Uni showed their intent through charging and hacking away at our opening bowlers. Matt Alexander picked up the first wicket snicking off the more aggressive opener. Matt was most probably the pick of our bowlers even though his bowling stats didn’t suggest this. Sydney Uni ended up with 267 which was 50 runs too many due to the excessive no balls bowled and general laziness in the field.
With the bat, the only decent partnership was between Craig Little (56) who was aggressive and going after the bowling from ball one, having fun in dispatching Sydney Uni’s leg spin bowler for 21 off his first over and young Sam Gainsford (35). Matt Alexander finished off well for his 26no but we fell 68 runs short and never really looked like a winning chance.
If we want to be serious contenders to win the comp we need to turn up with a better attitude and do the fundamentals well such as limiting no balls and turning up on time.

4th Grade – Manly 8/213 (N. Toomey 34no, Jac. Graham 33, M. Cole 31) lost to Sydney Uni 4/214
4th grade are starting to struggle in a few areas which we can hopefully rectify over the next few games to ensure we get a finals place. Once again our top order batting was poor with only Joel Mason (22) and Matt Cole (31) getting a few. Bill D’Arcy (0) didn’t give himself a chance by letting his first ball hit his middle stump with no offer, Maso looked threatening and was maybe unlucky to be LBW, Sam Hole (7) got a good piece of a hook shot but straight to fine leg, Tom Kaye (7) got a tickle and Josh Petersen (12) was also LBW to make it 5/67. Matt Cole and Jacob Graham (33) started to rebuild via a 46 run partnership before Cole attempted to pull only to mishit to mid-on, Evans (13) and Jacob then took it along to 145 before an across the line hoik by Evans saw the introduction of Brad “Bevan” Wilson (21no). Soon after Jacob’s dismissal Nick Toomey (34no) came in and he and Bevo put on a sparkling 58 in 7 overs, showing everybody else that the pitch was flat and with some positive intent runs could be scored easily. These two batted very well to give us a competitive, but well under par, total of 213.
Our bowling unfortunately offered us no real chance to win the game. We were bowling too many four balls and this, along with 15 wides/no balls, let Uni bat without too many cares. No bowler looked likely, with Brad picking up an early one and also bowling well at the end the pick of them. Tom Kaye also bowled tidily and picked one up. A great run out by Josh Petersen was another highlight but we were well down on our game in just about all aspects. We need to improve quickly if we are to be any kind of threat this year.

5th Grade – Manly 5/110 (H. Ferguson 32) beat Sydney Uni 106 (J. Carden 4/25, B. Kittlety 3/17)
We bowled solidly throughout the day with all the bowlers picking up a few poles each. The openers, Ben Falconer and Justin knight did their job dismissing the openers early, and the wickets began to fall in quick succession after that. Jake Carden snared 4fa, Ben Falconer picked up 1, Kiwi Ben bowled awesome for 3 and a direct hit run out from Hamish dismissed the Students for 106.
Openers Hamish Ferguson and Nick Williams started off the chase well with a solid 58 run partnership. (Nick 21, and Hamish 32). Toby Poole and Tommy Kelly didn’t last long, until Jake Carden and Greg Boyer sailed the ship home to beat the students in style. Good win for the Manly boys….. 7 POINTS!!!!
