First junior girls competition kicks off in Manly Warringah

The Wakehurst and Harbord girls team after their first official game of cricket
Almost every single major sporting code has identified females as a source of growth for the sport, and is shaping as the next battle ground for the hearts and minds of the Australian sporting public.

We have seen cricket take huge leaps in the area over the last 2 years with the huge success of the Women’s Big Bash League, including ratings that rival the A-League, as well as the recent announcement of the NSW Breakers side becoming the first fully professional women’s team in Australian sport.

We are pleased to confirm that this wave of female participation has extended to the Northern Beaches with the completion of the very first ever girls matches last weekend on the Northern Beaches.

Beacon Hill, Forest, Harbord and Wakehurst have all shown the way with formation of U/13 girls teams and there were some amazing results in the games on Saturday 21st October.

In the first match, Harbord hit 3 for 98 from their 20 overs but Wakehurst were able to easily overhaul the total, hitting 1 for 107. Multiple girls were retired throughout the day to give everyone a go, but the star was Gemma Lacey who hit 22* for Wakehurst.

In the second match which was rain reduced, Beacon Hill were only able to get to 24 off their 13 overs which was easily accounted for by Forest who passed the target in the 8th over for the loss of just 2 wickets.

The continued growth of cricket on the Northern Beaches is fantastic to see and we are very excited for all of the girls. But don’t let them be the only ones who have all the fun. If you or your daughter is interested it is not too late to join a team. Please contact your local club at http://manlyjuniorcricket.nsw.cricket.com.au/common/pages/public/iv/clubs.aspx?

Congrats to the Manly Warringah Junior Cricket Association, as well as the individual clubs, on such a great step forward.
