Trying Weekend for the Tahs – Weekend Wrap 15th/16th February 2020

A disappointing weekend for the Tahs with Sydney on top in most Men’s grades and one win from four games for our Women. M1s started well at 0/53 but after 2 quick wickets we weren’t able to put together a partnership of substance, Jay Lenton top scoring with 47 and Mickey Edwards getting 2 wickets at the end. M2s had a fantastic first half with Sydney 8/108 but let them off the hook before a major batting collapse has us on the brink of defeat. Skipper Andrew Jamieson taking 5fa. M3s fought hard all day to be all out in the final over, Jacob O’Sullivan (50) and Sam Hole (49) the standouts. M4s are behind the eight ball despite a half century from Andrew Lindsay, losing 5/15 at the end of innings and not quite penetrating with the ball. M5s didn’t get on and play 120 overs next week

Renee Hough was the star with both bat and ball in W3s but we just didn’t go hard enough with the bat, finishing 19 runs short despite 7 wickets still in the sheds. W2s had a major batting collapse with only Kristie Crawford batting at #3 fighting through. We just weren’t able to defend the small total. Brewers suffered a heavy loss to Sydney, again not getting enough runs and the opposition batting on for bonus points. But our W15s were fantastic led by Francesca Poate in her debut match with 32*, then a team performance with the ball to dismiss Universities for 66.

Andrew has been a wonderful mentor for a young and developing second grade men’s team this year. He has more than proved his worth both tactically and with the ball.

This was Jamo’s 3rd 5 wicket haul and first since 2017/18. It takes him to 90 wickets for the club at an average of just under 16. Another great season so far from him with hopefully more to come!

Saturdays 1st team game was based out at the ever beautiful ground of Drummoyne Oval. For a change the sky was blue and the sun was beaming down at 12 index rating of harmful UV rays. To start the day Jay lost the toss and Manly was stuck into bat on what seemed like a SH1, Manly got of to a steady start with Logan Weston and Joel Foster making it to the 20’s. However, the pair were soon removed. Wickets continued to fall at regular period with Jay Lenton showing some power hitting with 47 of 77 balls. Batters continued to get starts before finding a way to be dismissed, Beadle showed some ticker with a 36* before Manly was all out for a below par 192.

Tension was high in the air and with 20 overs left in the day for Manly to bowl everyone was excited to see the great Morne Morkel roll his arm over. Mickey Edwards was looking in some fine rhythm picking up 2 wickets in quick succession. The day ended with Sydney at 2/57. A big day from the Manly boys is needed in order to show some promise of pulling a win out of the box next week.

Elliot Herd

The boys rock up in high spirits considering the wet weather from the week before. Hoping that Jamo can finally win a toss, but what do you know another loss toss and Sydney choosing to bat what looked like a flat wicket.

Ping and Jamo got us under way with the new ball threatening the edge of the bat. Both of them bowled extremely well and were both unlucky not to bowl them out in the first hour, with plenty plays and misses. Once we got one wicket the lads got stuck into the middle order with Hicksy and TK getting into the action.

The boys continued to take wickets and the lads continued to apply the pressure.
For some weird reason once the tail rock up to the crease we seem not know how to get them out. Again another partnership with the tail got Sydney up to a respectable total of 170 consider we had them 7-89. The pick of the bowlers was none other than the skip A. Jamieson (5 – 43) who bowled with consistent line and length and got the rewards. Well bowled Jamo.

Unfortunately that was the only highlight of the day. We went into bat and it all went down hill from there. The lads finishing up 8-72. All and all a pretty poor effort from the lads. With lads still in the crease there is always a chance we can pull something off. The lads will rock up next week with a positive attitude willing to fight to the end.

Max Webber

The 3rd Grade boys rolled up to Birchgrove oval to nothing but sunshine which is certainly a change up on recent weeks. As per usual the toss was lost by skipper McLachlan in his final game, a fitting way to end. Brewster and Ned Hole opened up, Ned unfortunately fell early (2) to some patient bowling from Sydney. Brewster and Griffin combined for a stand that saw the boys get to 2-50. Griffin (17) and Brewster (32) were removed to reasonably soft dismissals. Starting what would seem to be a reoccurring theme. Jacob batted superbly in the middle to bring up a well made 50, Jake Osbourne batted well alongside him to get the boys to tea in a reasonable position of 5-100. A very slow outfield meant this was probably worth more on a normal day. Zachy T and Jordan Daly unfortunately undone by a spinner who bowled very well throughout the day making it tough to score. With the game in the balance in came future heir to the thrown San Hole, after his parents had bailed early not backing him in at all, he really grit his teeth and swept his way to a lovely 48 before hitting one of the rankest half trackers to square leg. A very important dig none the less. Little contributions from Baino and Nickos who was absolutely triggered, a timely reminder that retirement will be sweet. The final wicket of Seward fell on the final ball of the day, all out for 193. With a slow outfield and a good bowling attack the boys are confident of getting the job done next week.

Matt Brewster

Manly 4^th Grade turned up to Grahams knowing a solid performance this round could set them on a path to make the top 6. As the covers were lifted the boys were greeted with a surprisingly flat deck however with a amount of rain during the week both sides knew there would be a bit early. Manly Won the toss and elected to bat looking to continue on from their previous match total of 300 plus.

Unfortunately things didn’t get off to the start the boys were looking for. Adam(1) was out early pushing one to square leg and Dom(0) followed sooner after getting a tricky one early. This brought Alec (Pipes) to join Cohen at the crease. Both boys struggled early at times with many dot balls however both maintained there wicket for a period as they started to build a small partnership, This was however was undone just before drinks when Alec (18) tried to mince one into the middle of the Pacific Ocean. This was quickly followed with Cohen(39) Exiting after drinks to a rash shot.

Manly needed a partnership to put anything respectable on the board. This came in the form of Billy And Charles. Both looked comfortable at the crease, Billy playing with his usual strength hitting the ball all around the ground and sometimes well out of it and Charles playing his usual flair. Both boys started to get Manly into a position of strength, However once passing 50 Billy soon exited. Lachie Kerr entered and continued to add runs to Manlys total. However his wicket brought a large collapse, With the last 5 wickets falling for less the 20. Manly were bowled out for 183.

With still 26 overs to bowl in the day, Manly knew that if they took a few wickets they could set themselves up in a strong position the following week. All bowlers bowled well with consistency and tight lines however were met with stubborn resistance and were only able to pick up the 1 wicket.

Much to do next week however the boys are full of confidence knowing that a quality bowling attack can take the wickets they need in order to get the victory.

Alec Duly

The girls arrived at Birchgrove Oval extra ready for the game after last week’s washout. As the pitch wasn’t covered from the rain the night before, Jess and the team were unsure whether they wanted to bowl or bat. Jess lost the toss and we were sent into bat.

Nat G and Zara opened the batting, Nat’s innings came to a quick end from being run out first delivery of the game. This brought Mikaela to the crease, however, she was sadly sent back without a run by an interesting lbw call. In came Kristie who went on to be not out and the highest run scorer (22). Next fell Zara (12) with second highest run score. The girls then went on to have an infamous Manly girls batting collapse falling 7/10. This brought in Chelsea who went on to make the third highest run score of 3. The girls finished their batting innings all out in the 29th over for 56 runs.

The Manly girls had a tough job ahead of them defending only 56 runs. Mikaela and Chelsea opened. This innings started strong with a maiden over from Chelsea. With no wickets falling in the first few overs, Jess brought in our spinners Zara and Sienna in attempts of breaking the opening partnership. Sienna broke through, bowling the opening batter around her legs, with one of the best deliveries I’ve seen. Some even compare this delivery to the likes of Shane Warne. The girls then began to lose hope with no wickets falling for a number of overs. On came Mia in her attempt to break through. The next wicket finally fell with Mikaela taking a great catch of Mia’s blowing. The girls grabbed another wicket straight after, caught again by Mikaela off Paige’s bowling. Paige went on to take another wicket, finishing her spell 2/15. Unfortunately, the girls could not defend the runs as Sydney surpassed Manly’s score in the 22nd over.

Manly women’s 3rd grade were up early and after a tough, long drive we ended up in the ghetto (ratatata), aka Raby Oval. With a few of our L and P plate drivers making it out there in record speed, travelling at only ‘90 kmph’. Then the incredible Ross Denny coming not much later, everyone knowing it he made it in a speedy 20 minutes. With our usual skipper ditching us for a long work day out at Royal North Shore Hospital, we were delighted with the presence of top of the table 2nd grade skipper, newly engaged and fun loving Jessica ‘Tiger Woods’ Kaye. Her fantastic captaincy started after she completed the Kokoda Trail (in record speed of only 2 days, so everyone grab your tickets to watch her in this years Olympic games in Japan) after parking in the wrong car park. With our luck we most likely lost the toss (after confirming with mycricket and northern beaches best ranga spin bowler, we did in fact lose the toss) so we were sent in to bowl. After a ‘close’, Shane Warne quality pitch analysis we established absolutely nothing about how the pitch was going to perform.

Gemma ‘still upset she couldn’t see her boyfriend on Valentine’s day’ Lacey opened the bowling with Alicia ‘I’ve umpired here’ Humphrey. Both setting a good standard, however some missed chances in the field meant we were only able to take the wicket of one opening batsmen after a great catch from Nat ‘however you say her last name’ Guoyt. At first change Women’s best spin duo Claire ‘Warney’ Waddington and Sallie ‘female Lloyd Pope (just because she’s a ranga)’ Molyneux came into the attack. This saw square leg move themselves to the boundary as well as mid-wicket becoming deep mid-wicket. However, consistent bowling saw few runs leaked off these overs. Next into the attack was Renee ‘dorito’ Hough after a boundary off the first ball causing the opener to retire after an amazing innings, two new batsmen were at the crease. With extravagant bowling from the other end by Isabelle ‘Snap Maps’ Keene. Saw ‘Dorito’ take two wickets are the batsmen went for her classic slog sweep to cow corner. Rounding out the innings with some stunning medium pacers from skipper ‘Tiger Woods’, and Cam ‘I study legal’ Pryor from the other end taking the final wicket of the innings with a surprising catch from ‘Snap Maps’ or more widely known as Butter Fingers. Shoutout to the incredible and consistent fielding of Abby ‘Actually doesn’t speed’ Taylor.

Manly were chasing 103 for victory.

After the best throw downs grade cricket has ever seen from Simon ‘Can do anything’ Waddington, the opening duo of ‘Warney’ and ‘However you say her last name’ were ready to go. A good opening partnership of a whopping 14 runs (most of them from extras), saw dismissal of ‘Warney’ and ‘Dorito’ arrived at the crease. Coming off a 50 run partnership with Hazel ‘I lost my training kit’ Nichols anything was possible. The wicket of ‘However you say her last name’ fell after a well earned 19, ‘I lost my training kit’ was at the crease with a big innings in her. After the loopy spinner came into the attack, ‘I lost my training kit’s’ eyes lit up however the the party at middle stump was unfortunately crashed by Campbelltown ‘hopefully another person doesn’t ghost me’ Cricket Club. The innings was completed by ‘Tiger Woods’ sending some great shots down to the green and ‘Dorito’ who surprisingly didn’t hit any (many) to cow corner. But were unfortunately unable to get to the total after some great bowling at the tail end of the innings. Nevertheless, the girls were all smiles and will take many positives from the game. Celebrations, likened to that of the bbl09 champions, and best team out there Sixers (sorry not sorry Thunder) were followed after an illegally quick journey back to manly for some well earned starbucks. Ending the day with men’s 2s and a fat feed at Wok Bar, saw a good end to a long day.

Where else would you want to be on a beautiful Sunday morning than playing against the undefeated Sydney Cricket Club at Ryde Oval? A few cars got lost on the way but as they say, it’s not about the journey but the destination. An intense warm-up of fielding soccer quickly got shut down after protests of boredom. Scott, who evidently had a late night, forced us to do the trusty triangle drill, which required blood, sweat and tears. After a devastating (but not surprising) loss of the toss, we were sent in to bat. Ruby and Gemma opened up the batting and Ruby was happy with a single run before doing a full 180 back to the sheds. Kate, in next, took a ‘slow and steady wins the race’ approach, managing to get two runs next to her name. Jess Mulcahy went into bat, scoring 21 runs before being bowled. Shortly after that, Gemma’s spectacular innings came to end. Gemma stayed in for 33 overs and scored a very impressive 31 against some good bowling, a grade PB for Gem with the bat. Hannah then went into face and was caught on three runs. This wicket saw Laura in, who smashed magnificent 23 off 22 and hit an effortless six. Laura’s innings was ended after being caught. As we were getting towards the end of the innings, Renee excitedly went in to bat but was disappointed after facing just one ball and ending our innings not out. Jess Manning went in to finish us off and scored a whopping two off three balls.

With getting only 107 runs the girls knew that we had to bring it with our bowling, we had to be bowling full and straight. The Sydney openers came out strong, they showed great skill and class in their shots. Unfortunately, our bowling just wasn’t up to scratch, neither was our fielding. We had many missed opportunities in the fielding which made it extremely frustrating for the girls. However, a lot of our bowlers were bowling some great balls but the skill from the Sydney batters was just shining so brightly through. Sydney got to Manly’s total wicketless and decided to bat on. We eventually took three wickets courtesy of a run out assisted by Kate and Hannah. We then got out the other opener, from a great wicket by Kate made better by the catch from Jess Mulcahy. And the 3rd and final wicket was a caught behind from skipper Hannah, bowled by Jaz.

A disappointing result for the girls, but even more reason to get back to training and work even harder to get a win next week.

Under bright sunshine only the water on the covers showed any suggestion of the previous weeks weather. Removal of the covers showed what looked like a brand new wicket despite having nearly 80 overs played on it the day before. So it was with great excitement that Emily Horstead called correctly and Manly chose to bat.

Once again our openers had us off to a good start with Caitlin du Preez and Maya Nicey taking the score to 24. The Universities bowling would be accurate all day but with little pace to work with and it was this that brought about Caitlin’s dismissal, caught for 9. Next over Emily watched Maya (11) and then next ball Stephanie Hughes play across the line to slow full deliveries. Suddenly we were 3/23 and needing to consolidate. What we did not need was a runout, but Emily owes Sophie Lowry a milkshake after trying a single on a miss field. Emily knew she needed to buckle down.

Hannah Moss (11) and then debutant Franky Poate built partnerships with Emily. And when Emily departed for 24 the score was 7/107 with 6 overs to go. A Franky pull shot suddenly found her timing, accelerating to a retirement on 32 not out. With some late innings urgency we made a slightly under par 8/140.

After another fabulous Manly lunch spread (thank you to the contributors) we set about defending our total. Universities did well early keeping out the very accurate Caitlin and Steph. Caitlin delivered 12 dots in a row. It was Steph who got the first break through (lbw) with score 1/6 after 4 overs. Jaime Loh then fired one from extra cover to wicket keeper Shae Hiskett-Jones who completed a runout.  Emily followed with an LBW and bowled to have Universities 4-25 after 10 overs. Maya’s left arm orthodox challenged Universities most aggressive batsman and she had her bowled in her second over.  Universities now 5/39 off 13 overs. Franky then picked up a sharp catch at mid-wicket off Hannah to have the score at 6/58 at drinks. 

Coach Anthony asked for more energy in the field and for the girls to make the transition from left hand to right hand field more efficient. It was Sophia Chick’s over that then just about sealed the match.  Sophia bowled at the stumps and had two LBW’s on consecutive deliveries to be on a hat trick.  The hat trick ball was straight too and wrapped the left hander on the pads. A massive shout from all the Manly girls was eventually turned down.  Caitlin then came back for her second spell and took a deserved wicket thanks to the safe hands of Sophia.

The end result was a 74 run win that secured a good portion of the bonus points on offer.  We will be sitting around 3^rd place and the girls are looking for the challenging trip to Penrith next week.
