Saturday & Sunday saw the Men resume on Day 2 of fixtures against Sydney University, while W1s hosted a T20 double header, as W2s & Brewers had their first one-day fixtures of the season. W3s were forfeited against on Saturday.
Saturday fixtures
Men’s 1st Grade:
M1s resumed 0/79 in pursuit of Sydney Uni’s 252. Brewster (61) & Beadle (121no) picking up where they left off last week with a continuation of their excellent partnership, ultimately worth 128, as both passed fifty. The first breakthrough saw a slight halt to the Tahs’ momentum as a few wickets followed at regular intervals, but the class of Beadle continued to shine through as he brought up yet another faultless hundred. Skipper Foster (28) joining him for a 63 run partnership, as Beadle moved to 121no with ease, before Joseph hit the winning runs for a six wicket first innings win.
Men’s 2nd Grade:
After a long toil last week saw Sydney Uni 8/216, the Tahs closed out the innings quickly on Day 2, Osbourne with the 9th & a Toohey run out for the 10th to have the Students all out for 231. An early wicket wasn’t the ideal start, but Croft (112) & R.Kapoor (42) settled in for an 85 run stand to have the Tahs in a strong position. The former particularly central to the run chase as he compiled his maiden 2nd Grade hundred with a combination of patience & aggression. Combining with N.Hole (54no) for a 127 run 3rd wicket stand to ice the game, before Hole & M.Kapoor (10no) navigated the final runs for an excellent 7 wicket win.
Men’s 3rd Grade:
The Tahs declared 9/200 with the wicket looking similarly favourable for bowling to last week. Skinner started well without luck, however, inconsistency from the Tahs saw the Students off to a flyer early. Skipper Webber breaking through twice quickly either side of drinks to make it 2/80, but, the Students counter-attacked their way to 3/180 at tea, with the game looking gone for all money. It was almost the miracle of all miracles though, as Cumming dismissed the set batter first ball after lunch, before Walker broke through shortly after. Another two to the former, and one to the latter, in crazy scenes, and a chaotic run out, seeing the Students 9 down & still 3 behind. A catch to tie the game falling millimetres out of reach, Sydney Uni winning by one wicket. Sent back out to bat, the Tahs counter attacked to be 4/80 when captains shook hands.
Men’s 4th Grade:
Resuming 0/36 chasing 187, Donnan (103no) was joined by the returning K.Mendel (76) as the two were patient to begin with before both accelerating as their innings’ went on. Donnan showing composure beyond his years on his way to his maiden hundred for Manly, setting the platform beautifully with a classy innings that put the Tahs well on the way to victory. Mendel as well cautious to start, but then counter-attacking through the second half of his innings as he dispatched the Students to all parts of Grahams in an excellent half century. Wheeler (10no) there at the end alongside Donnan for a romping 9 wicket first innings win.
Men’s 5th Grade:
Sydney Uni resumed 2/14 in reply to Manly’s 335, with the Students aggressive from the outset of Day 2 as they counter-attacked their way out of trouble. A run out to Horstead the catalyst for a regular flow of wickets from that point on. The in form Jenkins striking twice in quick succession, before Graham & W.Matheson did exactly the same shortly after as the Tahs attack built consistent pressure. H.Matheson closing out the first innings with the 10th wicket, as skipper Waddington enforced the follow on with plenty of time still available. To the Students’ credit though, they batted positively in the second innings to negate the chance of outright, despite wickets to Graham, H.Matheson & Counsell.
Sunday fixtures
Women’s 1st Grade:
Manly Oval hosted W1s double header on Sunday, the first fixture seeing the Tahs win the toss & bat against Gordon. Solid starts from Henry (22) & Horsfall (16) creating a decent platform, but the Tahs lost their way through the second half of the innings, late runs from skipper McLerie (15) pushing the total to 7/91. Gordon were off to a flyer in reply, until Henry broke through, but the visitors continued to build frustrating partnerships, wickets to Crawford & Hughes not enough as Gordon passed our total in the 18th over to win by 7 wickets. Later in the afternoon, the Tahs again won the toss & batted, this time against Parramatta. Unfortunately though, the Tahs top order couldn’t muster much momentum, with Punter (28no) & McLerie (21) the mainstays in defiant innings’ as the Tahs posted 5/81. Despite an early wicket to McLerie, Parramatta’s batters took the attack to the Tahs to be in complete control of the run chase. Crawford & Punter with breakthroughs but it was too little too late as Parramatta won by 7 wickets inside 13 overs.
Women’s 2nd Grade:
Up the highway to Maitland, Tahs skipper Hughes won the toss & elected to bat at Thornton Oval. Terrey (22) made a positive start, but the Tahs lost momentum heading into the first drinks break as regular wickets fell. Momentum was tough to find, despite the best efforts of Burke (42) who batted with great maturity to anchor the Tahs’ innings. Another late flurry of wickets seeing the Tahs all out for a below-par 127, but the bowlers were up for the fight as Allen struck twice early to give the Tahs a chance. A run out & two quick wickets to Terrey having Greater Hunter on the back foot at 5/56. But the home side fought back strongly with a match-winning 6th wicket partnership, a late surge from the Tahs not enough as GHC won by three wickets.
Brewer Shield:
In their first one-day fixture of the season, Brewers won the toss & were batting first. A strong start between Brown (61), Jayakody (16) & Pearson (23) building a great foundation for the Tahs at 1/95. The middle order though lost their way as wickets fell at regular intervals, however, Brown fought hard to anchor the innings amidst the collapse, compiling a crucial half century under pressure to lead the Tahs to a competitive total of 161. With the ball, T.Ford made the perfect start with a wicket first ball, as the Tahs took control throughout the bowling innings courtesy of three wickets to Crabbe, two to skipper Addison, and one each to Brown & Jayakody, to go with a run out to Davies. Last wicket resistance from Sydney Uni pushing their total to 126, but nonetheless, a strong win for the Tahs.
Upcoming fixtures:
This weekend sees the Men take on Penrith, M1s in a Saturday/Sunday game at Manly Oval, while M2s-M5s play one-dayers. W1s are also up against Penrith in a T20 double-header, while W2s & W3s match up with Gordon in one-day fixtures, and Brewers travel south for a grand-final rematch against the Southern Swans.
As always, up the Tahs!
