Saturday fixtures

Men’s 1st Grade:

Back to white ball cricket as skipper Foster won the toss & elected to bowl at Manly Oval. A disciplined start from Stobo & Evans resulting in an early wicket for each, before Sutherland consolidated. When J.Davies took the 3rd wicket, it led to a quick flow of wickets as Davies & Stobo picked up another each, until a middle order fightback from Sutherland. But the Tahs bowlers stuck at it superbly, as Dhillon took 3fa in the latter stages, along with another to Davies to restrict Sutherland to all out 163. The run chase started shakily losing both openers early, but that just paved the way for an O.Davies (120*) onslaught, as he was at his belligerent best on the way to a superlative 120no off 66 balls, including 6 maximums. Combining with brother Joel (27*) for an unbeaten 155 run partnership to secure an 8 wicket bonus point win in just the 21st over.

Men’s 2nd Grade:

Sent into bat first at Sutherland Oval, M2s were on the back foot early with both openers dismissed. A counter attack from N.Hole (32) steadied the ship momentarily, as Joseph (98) built into his innings. Combining with O’Sullivan (39) for an 85 run partnership that set up the innings, as Joseph compiled a superb 98 with great tempo before falling agonisingly short of a well deserved 100. Vumbaca (47) with a crucial innings at the death to push the Tahs towards 250, before the last few wickets fell in a hurry with the Tahs all out for 252. Sutherland began well in the chase with two solid partnerships, broken first by Pryke & then by a direct hit run out to Hole. A couple more partnerships had the game in the balance at 4/170. But tight bowling pushed Sutherland’s required rate up, as a wicket to Joseph & two each to Vumbaca & Trewartha saw the Tahs take control, ultimately seeing Sutherland all out for 202.

Men’s 3rd Grade:

The Tahs had first opportunity with the bat after being sent in at Grahams. A steady start, but a few regular wickets saw the game in the balance at 3/65. But Melchiore (79) & Cooper (87) were up to the task, managing a critical period after drinks before building into an excellent 88 run partnership that set a superb platform for the Tahs. Both compiling classy half centuries, the former playing the anchor role as the latter went at a run a ball. McDowell (66no) then capitalised on the strong foundation with some super hitting late to propel the Tahs to 6/271 from 50. Bishop Perrett struck relatively early with the ball, but Sutherland fought back strongly to be in a good position at 1/110. But that’s where the Tahs turned the screws, Wigney dismissing both set batters before spin took control. S.Hole only meant to bowl an over to help change ends, but took a wicket, ended up with 4fa from 8 overs. Further wickets also to Cumming & Bishop Perrett, as the Tahs bowled Sutherland out for 204 to record a 67 run win.

Men’s 4th Grade:

M4s made the trip south to Tonkin Park, skipper Parkinson winning the toss & electing to bat. Karlsson Lacy (155) & Donnan (48) making an aggressive start to the innings with a massive opening partnership at a quick rate to put the pressure right back on the hosts. But it was the partnership between the former alongside club great Merchant (51) that launched the Tahs towards a mammoth total. Karlsson-Lacy in superb touch compiling a phenomenal 155 at better than a run a ball, while Merchant brought up a classy half century. A late cameo from Dinan (17*) propelling the Tahs to 6/305. In reply, Sutherland’s openers began patiently, but once the first wicket fell, they tumbled very quickly. In a remarkable feat not that doesn’t happen too often these days, it was the Kerr & Dinan show, as both picked up 5fa each, including Kerr with the wicket of former Aussie test player Phil Jaques. Sutherland all out for 89 as the Tahs romped to a bonus point 216 run win.

Men’s 5th Grade:

Skipper Waddington won the toss & chose to bat at Mike Pawley Oval, as the returning J.Coyte (129 off 100) took the game on early, alongside Horstead (17) in a 51 run opening partnership. Coyte then combining with Nasser (42 off 21) as the two took the attack to Sutherland’s bowlers with some brutal ball striking in a 71 run stand. Seward (40) continuing the momentum alongside Coyte as the two combined for 115 runs to set a tremendous platform for the Tahs. Coyte bringing up a sensational hundred along the way. Handy contributions from Pike (29) & J.Brewster (33) helping the Tahs to a super total of 333 when the final wicket fell on the penultimate ball of the innings. With the ball, it was a clinic from the Tahs after a steady start from Sutherland. Buchanan continuing his strong form with incredible figures of 4/11 from 8 overs, while Brewster picked up 3fa, and W.Matheson 2fa, as consistent pressure led to a massive collapse, the Tahs winning by 265 runs with a bonus point.

Women’s 3rd Grade:

Taking on the defending premiers at Balgowlah Oval, the Tahs were asked to field first. Searles making a terrific start to the bowling innings with a wicket in the opening over, before Parramatta fought back with a few patient innings’ from the rest of their top order. It wasn’t until the score reached 79 that the 2nd wicket fell courtesy of Bursill, who then took the 3rd just a few balls later. Two wickets also to Wright, along with a run out, helping the Tahs restrict Parramatta to 6/85 from 20 overs. The opening partnership of skipper S.James (30) & Wilson (19) continued their strong form of late with another great counter-attack to begin the run chase, as the skipper reached yet another mandatory retirement. Hough (21*) continuing the momentum & finishing off the run chase strongly for an 8 wicket win inside 14 overs.

Sunday fixtures

Women’s 1st Grade:

The first one-day fixture of the season for W1s as the Tahs were in the field first at Manly Oval after losing the toss. Sydney Uni making a really positive start putting the Tahs under pressure as their opening two partnerships combined for 70+ runs each. Henry picked up the first breakthrough at 87, before Whiteley struck at 160, as the visitors took advantage of a good batting wicket to build towards a big score. Whiteley was the pick of the bowlers with an economical 10 over spell, to go with a wicket to Hughes, run out to Crawford, and a debut wicket for Sharma, as Sydney Uni posted 5/265 from 50. The worst possible start to the run chase as the Tahs lost a wicket in the first over, before Horsfall (74) & Henry (26) consolidated with a 66 run partnership. Horsfall & Burke (30) also combined for 53 runs, as the former compiled an excellent innings. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough though, as the Tahs ultimately fell 97 runs short when the final wicket fell.

Women’s 2nd Grade:

W2s returned home to Grahams as the Tahs moved into T20 mode, skipper S.Hughes winning the toss & electing to bat. Terrey (48) was busy early, rotating the strike positively before finding the boundary regularly with ease in a terrific innings that set a solid platform for the Tahs. Important contributions too from Kyme (16) & Frew (10) as both kept the score ticking over with team-first batting. S.Ford & Jayakody not out as the Tahs posted 7/105. With the ball, the Tahs started well as Terrey picked up the opening breakthrough before Allen took two shortly after each other to have Greater Hunter 3/27. The visitors fought back with a couple of decent partnerships, but an inspired spell from debutant leg-spinner Jayakody kept the Tahs in the game with 2fa, while Ford picked up the big wicket of the set batter. Unfortunately, Greater Hunter’s lower order were too good in the end, securing them a 4 wicket win in the 17th over.

Brewer Shield:

It was Brewers’ turn for the long trip west to Raby Oval to take on Campbelltown, as the Tahs were sent into bat first. But that certainly didn’t bother the opening partnership of young guns Pearson (88*) & Brown (48) who combined for a simply sensational 137 run partnership. Both batted with superb intent throughout their individual innings, finding the boundary regularly & rotating the strike well in between. Pearson particularly dominant on her way to an incredible 88no from 56 balls, while Brown provided invaluable support. Skipper Addison (17*) with a few late boundaries as the Tahs posted 1/172 from 20. With the ball, the Tahs quickly took the game away from Campbelltown with economical bowling that built consistent pressure. An incredible 7 maidens in 20 overs, T.Ford, Gillett & Martin with 2 maidens each, while Brown took 2fa, Davies 1, to go with two run outs. Campbelltown restricted to 5/58 in reply from 20 overs.

Upcoming fixtures

Local rivalry this weekend for the Men as the Tahs take on Mosman in one-day fixtures, with M1s, M3s & M5s away. W1s host Campbelltown at Manly Oval in a one-dayer on Sunday, while W2s, W3s & Brewers are in T20 mode with fixtures against Gordon, St George-Sutherland & Blacktown respectively.
