Waratahs support 2015 Melanoma March

The Manly Warringah Waratahs are again supporting the Melanoma March for 2015.

Melanoma March was first established in 2012 by James Economides, owner of Club Sponsor Red Property. James lost his 18 year old son to melanoma.
What started in Manly as a local event to honour the memory of those who had been lost to melanoma and to raise vital funds and awareness of this devastating disease quickly grew into a national initiative and the major annual fundraising campaign to support Melanoma Institute Australia.

By 2014, 16 locations around Australia (in both rural and metro locations) participated in the campaign with over 6000 people marching for a cure and raising $550,000 for melanoma research. The monies raised in 2014 contributed to fund a world first clinical trial aimed at improving life outcomes for patients with brain metastases, which impacts upon approximately 50% of advanced melanoma patients. The trial opened in October 2014 and will have a significant impact for melanoma treatment options around the world.

Melanoma March is an initiative of Melanoma Institute Australia, and has grown to now be a collaborative effort between Melanoma Institute Australia, Melanoma WA and Australian Melanoma Research Foundation to give the campaign national reach.

In 2015, the goal of the Melanoma March is to raise $1 million to fund a research project of national importance and continue our work to find a cure for melanoma.
This years Melanoma March will be on Sunday 22nd March, starting outside the Steyne Hotel on the beach side of the road at 9am. Participants will complete a round trip 4 km walk, going down to the Lagoon and back again.

The Steyne Hotel will host both the pre and post event.

The Melanoma March is also selling bandana’s to help raise funds and the Manly Warringah Waratahs have bought 55 of them for each player across our 5 grades. Unfortunately we won’t be able to participate in the march as we will be playing our first week of finals across all grades, however we hope the event is resounding success.
