Green Shield Round 5 vs Faifield Liverpool – Match Report

Green Shield round 5 – Manly-Warringah 4/128 (J. Osborne 54, B. Bates 28) def Fairfield 123 (B. Watts 5/8, L.Franks 2/12, J.Brewster 2/23)

The boys arrived to Manly Oval with the conditions not so flash, with rain coming down at a constant rate. The covers were peeled off and put back on regularly before it was decided that lunch would be taken early. Play didn’t commence until roughly 12:30. Skipper Will Greenland won the toss and elected to bowl with the match being reduced to 40 overs a side. After a poor effort in the field on Tuesday the boys really needed to lift, and lift we did with very little errors made if any.

Highlights of our bowling inning were Luca’s demolition of the top order snaring the crucial wickets off the opener and number 3, finishing with figures of 2/12 off his 4. Aidan supported well at the other end with economical figures of 0/8. Jordy Brewster fired in his second spell grabbing the key wickets of their 2 best batsmen. Ben Watts was the star snatching a well-deserved 5/8 after copping the brunt of some hard hitting last game. Ben came back determined to improve and bowled fantastically leaving the batsmen clueless with his sharp left arm orthos.

With only 123 on the board and the pitch not doing too much, Jake Osborne and Byron Bates opened up the batting and got Manly off to a good start after improvement was needed after last games top order collapse. Jake and Byron smacked the bowlers around and pushed the score to 0/83 before Byron fell after a solid knock of 28 which had us in a good position to win the match. Jake and Will pushed the score along to 101 till Jake fell on a well composed 54. The consolidators Ned and Will met at the crease and put on a few before Will was dismissed on 12, Bailey came in hit a few then left for 3. The job was finally finished 4 down with Ned (12*)playing a great cover drive to grab our 3rd victory out of 4 games all of which being on our home turf at Manly. This now puts us in the top 8 and in a good position to make the quarters. So hopefully the boys can have an away victory next week out at Hawkesbury!
