Monday News – Rd 15 vs Randwick-Petersham – Day 1

The Manly boys had a solid start to Round 15 against Randwick-Petersham, with all grades in relatively strong positions. 1s are 3/80 with Shank and Nappa at the crease chasing 230. 2s dominated with 307, 3s are 2/68 chasing 113, 4s recovered from 7/100 to make 197, and a brilliant 156no from Ross Trewartha saw 5s make 270.

4 Pines Brewery Player of the Week – Ross Trewartha
Coming out of retirement this year, Ross Trewartha has shown that he hasn’t lost the form and talent that he possessed as a young whipper-snapper. The ex-first-grader anchored 5th grade’s 276 with an amazing 156*, including some classic strokeplay that brought back memories of his hay-day. Ross has been in great form with the bat recently, and he’s doing a great job helping Dave mentor the young talent moving up the grades. Great stuff Roscoe!

Outstanding Performances
Aidan Baker – 61 (2nd Grade)
Ryan Bonnor – 56 (2nd Grade)
Joel Mason – 49* (3rd Grade)
Ross Trewartha – 156* (5th Grade)

1st Grade Round 15 vs Randwick-Petersham
1st grade are in a real-contest in their crucial match up against Randwick Petersham at Coogee Oval. Bowling first against a batting line-up boasting big names such as Katich and Khawaja, the Tahs took regular wickets throughout the day to restrict RPs to 232 off 73. Steve O’Keefe was the pick of the bowlers with 3-60, while Boss, Miunting and McLachlan each picked up 2 and Edgell chiming in with 1.

In reply, Manly are 3-80 overnight after losing 3 fairly quick wickets. Cruickshank (25*) and Merchant (20*) are currently at the crease, with some real application with the bat needed next week to bring the boys home.

2nd Grade Round 15 vs Randwick-Petersham
2s had yet another dominant day on Saturday, smoking 307 off 87 overs. Marksy (45) and Doochman (56) opened up and got the boys off to a great start, with squirter anchoring the innings and Bonnor freeing his arms. Flat (61) came in at 3 and played some great strokes to keep the total ticking over, and some lower order hitting from Billy Lindsay (37), Matty Mee (35) and Mattoes (22 with 2 bombs – standard), bringing the total up to 307. Randwick are 0-19 in reply.

3rd Grade Round 15 vs Randwick-Petersham
Turning up to the atmospheric Petersham Oval, 3s were looking to make a statement against the lowly-placed Randwick Petersham. Losing the toss, the Tahs were asked to bowl on a deck that looked like it would offer a bit of assistance to the seamers. The Manly boys were right on the spot from ball 1, picking up regular wickets and keeping the runs down with a bit of help from the slow outfield. At 5-30 odd off 20+ overs, the opposition were in real trouble, but they showed some fight and counter-attacked to raise a bit of concern in the Manly camp. However, 2 quick wickets before tea ensured Manly went into the break right on top, with RPs 7-70 odd. More of the same followed after the break, but the number 10 came out and decided to close his eyes and swing, with a few of his top-spin forehands coming off and reaching the boundary. Genie (2) eventually snicked him off and RPs were dismissed for 113 off 53. Pick of the bowlers was Mickey Visser with 3fa, with Taylor (2) and Reecie (1) providing great support, and Gummer snaring 3 screamers at point.

With 25 overs left in the day, Maso and Shwebbs opened up, with the Don being his usual confident self, including some awesome strokeplay down the ground. What an amazing man he is. Webber went early, and Gummer followed soon after, leaving Pughy and Maso 15 overs to negotiate. Pughy was solid as a rock, but Maso continued to dispatch the loose ball, along with a few hacks to the cow. At stumps, the Tahs finished in a commanding position at 2-68, needing another 45 for victory, with Maso on 49*. More hard work needed next week to get the 6 points!

4th Grade Round 15 vs Randwick-Petersham
4s batted first at Grahams on Saturday but they never really got going. They stumbled to 9-130 before a great last-wicket partnership between Lukey Grant (41*) and Mickey Edwards (32) got them out of trouble. They ended with a respectable 197 off 82 overs, and have the opposition 0-15 going into Day 2.

5th Grade Round 15 vs Randwick-Petersham
Fifth grade had an amazing day on Saturday, largely thanks to veteran Ross Trewartha who smoked 156*. 5s finished with 276 off 72 overs as Roscoe led the way batting at number 3, and he was well supported at the end by number 11 Brad Wilson who managed 35. Randwick Petersham are 0-6 in reply, with 5s big favourites going into Day 2 in a must-win game.
