Vale Chris Stone

The Manly Warringah Waratahs are saddened to hear of the passing of ex-player Chris Stone.

Chris was 64 and passed away in Belgium on the 24th November after a long illness.

Chris played for the club across 2 seasons in 1986/87 and 1987/88, predominantly in 1st Grade. He took 43 wickets at an average of 26.28. He took his best bowling figures of 5 for 33 in 1987/88 in Round 9 against Mosman in 1st Grade.

Melbourne was his home, having played in the Victorian Schoolboys cricket side before spending a decade playing Grade Cricket for St Kilda.

Chris was also an accomplished AFL player, turning out for St Kilda Football Club between 1978 and 1981.

He later moved to Brussels where he became a successful businessman. He married Sophie Wilmes who became the Prime Minister of Belgium before stepping aside in 2022 to care for Chris after he was diagnosed with brain cancer.

Those who played in the mid 80’s remember Chris as a laid back team mate who was also a great team man. Our sympathies go out to his family and friends.

Vale, Chris Stone
