Vale Jim Evans

The MWDCC community is saddened to hear of the passing of Jim Evans, father of current player Warren and ex player Glen. Jim passed away on Monday 28th March, aged 86. Warren’s hoping the 3rd grade semi loss wasn’t the cause of his death.

‘Big Jim’ did the grade rounds for about 30 years straight starting with Glen in 1984 and doing his best to keep up with Warren up to the past year or two. It didn’t matter if it was a 1st grade Sat/Sun game out at Bensons Lane or an U/12 Cawsey shield practice game down in the ACT, Jim was there, usually sitting under a low hanging tree, or in some dark corner of the grandstand quietly observing.

He literally didn’t miss a game for many decades. For a while when Glen and Warren were playing 1st grade together Jim would look for the best spot in the ground to watch the game and if the Manly boys were out in the field, a game of “Where’s Jim?” would ensue. Often the green esky was the give away as he kept a low profile.

Jim loved his sport with all three boys (Glen, Warren and oldest brother Mitchell) playing rugby from age 5 and he was instrumental in the formation of the Forest Rugby Union District Cricket Club in the mid 1970s. Also it was his East Bros golf sticks that got the boys into golf.

His laconic sense of humour and easy going ways will be missed by all. It will be a small private cremation as per his wishes.
