Top Grades Tamed as 4s and 5s Shine – Monday News RD7 vs Randwick-Petes

Round 7 action of the SCA Premier Cricket competition saw the Travelsim Manly Warringah Waratahs notch up 2 wins from the 5 grades plus a loss in Brewer Shield.

The top 3 grades all suffered surprising loses, but our 4th grade, 5th grade and Brewer Shield teams all flew the Waratahs flag with great wins. We slip 1 place to 3rd in the Club Championship out of the 20 clubs.

Highlight of the weekend was without doubt our record breaking 5th grade 2nd wicket partnership between Jack Pickering and Dom Wheeler. They allowed 5th grade to build a match winning score, securing a bonus points in the process.

4th grade also flexed their muscle with a great victory, the middle order  cashing in while all wickets were shared for a great victory to keep Adam Gummer’s team at the top.

1st, 2nd and 3rd grade all went down to Randwick-Petersham, with the batting unfortunately not up to scratch in 2s and 3s, while 1s where just not able to get home after a middle order collapse.

Brewer Shield put in another great effort but were outclassed by an experienced Sydney side. The girls continue to improve every week and a win is just around the corner.

Despite sharing in a record 2nd wicket partnership with Dominic Wheeler who hit 117, this weeks 4 Pines Brewery Player of the Week goes to Jack Pickering, who hit his first ever hundred for the club in a scintillating 128 for 5th grade on Saturday.

A former Green Shield Captain, Jack has juggled grade cricket and his hockey commitments over the last few years and as a result has split his time some what between his 2 loves. Despite playing Australian U/16 hockey, Jack has the potential really push his cricket, and showed exactly what he is capable of on Saturday.

His sweet timing complements his power game perfectly , and if he focuses on his cricket will make a run up the grades in no time.

Well done Jack on the debut hundred!

e lost the toss and Randwick decided to bat on a beautiful Batting deck. 

Captain Anthony Sams started well to their innings with more than run a ball 30.

Taylor Beatty, took his wicket with his first bowl with a one-handed hanger from James Crosthwaite at 2nd slip. 

Overall, we bowled with great discipline to reduce their total to 243. 

James Crosthwaite started well with a quickfire 43 off 35 balls. Once he departed, we didn’t get back in the game to pursue an easy chase.

Randwick is one of the best short form bowling attacks and we required too much in the last 15 overs. 

Chris Green and Jay Lenton put on a good partnership to set up a win, however wickets in crucial periods didn’t allow us to maintain our composure. 

We fell short by 15 runs, and Randwick bowled well in their death overs. A lot to learn from this game going forward to next week’s final round before the Christmas break.

he Manly boys arrived at a picturesque Petersham Oval for the one day fixture ready to go and keen to keep some momentum gathered from the last couple rounds. Skipper Jack Ritchie won the toss and chose to bat on a nice looking batting wicket.

Rawlings and Weston opened up and got he boys off to a cracking start, seeing off some good bowling in overcast conditions. Jarrod soon fell, which unfortunately sparked a small collapse for the boys , who at one point were cruising, and ended up at 4-100. Some tight bowling in the middle overs restricted the Manly batters and a few more wickets fell. Joey Graham and Nick McLachlan batted well at the end to get the boys to a total of 194, with Joey hitting some great bombs.

Raring to go after the lunch breaks, the boys were confident that 194 was a defendable total and that we would come away with the 6 points. However, the Randwick-Petersham batters played well and formed a good partnership, with a wicket not being taken until after the 2nd drinks break. Although the Manly bowlers didn’t bowl too badly, the RPs batter were too good and they chased down our total 2 down in the 48th over, with Joey and Bishop-Perrett picking up the two wickets. Congratulations as well to RBP on his first second grade wicket. With one round before Christmas the boys will be keen to get the win next week and finish off the year with a bang.

The main grade rocked up to Grahams to find another amazing cricket wicket.

Having lost the toss we were sent in to bat, Billy D’Arcy was the first to go LBW and Sam Hole bowled the ball after.

Will Akhurst and Jarrod Walter steadied the ship but Will was caught at slip and Walter (trying to play straight) was caught at square leg.

Hicks, Brewster and Jamieson fell in quick succession, which left O’Sullivan and Jacob “Yak” Graham. They both came together when we needed them the most and O’Sullivan (52) saw us through a tough time while still punished the bad ball, Yak also was a key contributor with 25. He hit the bad ones and dug in when we needed. Watts came in and made a quick fire 17 getting caught on the boundary on the last ball of the innings leaving us all out 144 of 50 overs.

Only defending 144 we needed to get a few early to get into the game and Jamieson, Wilson, Hicks and Yak all bowled well. But the openers were in an aggressive mood and luck was with them. Watts came on and got a LBW early and then a nice catch by Jarrod ‘Julio’ Walter saw him grab 2 quickly and another catch by D’Arcy saw Watts take 3 for 19 off 10 and get us in the game.

Hicks bowled well and was rewarded with a snick and a bowled to keep us in the game, and then a run out from O’Sullivan had us right in the game.

From there batsmen 7 & 8 rode there luck and got there team over the line 6-146 in the 41st over.

he boys rocked up to Coogee oval on a fine looking day.

We lost the toss and were sent in to bat, but got off to a pretty good start despite losing a few quick wickets early. Zach Trewartha and Jimmy Crombie came together to create a great partnership which combined power with great rotation of strike.

We lost Crombie for a very important 32 but that brought Ash Virdi to the crease and he started smashing the bowlers all round the park with two massive sixes. Zach got to his fifty and was closely followed by Ash.

Zach departed towards the end of our innings for a very classy 67 and left Alex Bain and Ash to finish off the innings. Bainy hitt 18 off the last over and Ash finished on a brilliant 63 not out, finishing our innings off on 6-255.

We started off our bowling innings opening with Matty White and Glyn Archer who both bowled superbly and took some early wickets. We bowled very well cutting their runs down and our fielding backing up our bowlers very well.

With pressure building and the run rate increasing we took wickets regularly leaving Randwick-Petersham in trouble and we finished them off in the 48th over for 187, White, Archer and McKenna taking 2 each while Alexander, Crombie, Virdi and Trewartha all took 1 giving the boys a great win.

n a beautiful morning at MPO, the scene was set from early on as skipper Dom Wheeler won the toss and elected to bat on a pretty flat deck.

Dom and Joel Davies got us off to a great start as they played positive cricket from the outset. Unfortunately Joel was caught at the wicket which brought Jack Pickering to the crease. Dom and Jack mixed hard hitting with positive running as they pushed the score up past 150. The boys then brought up their hundreds one ball apart, with Dom following Jack.

Jack and Dom then lifted the run rate, before unfortunately Picko departing for a splendid 127. Dom was then unselfishly run out for 117 only overs later. With the score now on the brink of 300, Luca Franks and Aiden Bennett finished off the innings in style with Aiden 20* and Luca 25*.

Ben Falconer and Micky Council then got the ball running with Micky picking up 3 early wickets to leave Randy-Petes reeling. There was no real fight from Randwick as they played very negative cricket to end up at 162 after their 50 overs. The bowlers were able to put the brakes on and there was no real turning back, with Micky Council picking up 3fa and was well supported with Isaiah Vumbaca (2-19 off 10) and Dylan Marshall (1-18 off 9).

Overall it was a great day out and full congrats to Dom and Jack for their performances today, with hopes to back it up out at Campbelltown next week.

n another sparkling morning at Manly Oval, the U17 Brewers team played their second home game in succession against the undefeated Sydney team.  Sydney won the toss and sent Manly in to bat.

Nat and Genevieve opened the batting against a tricky opening bowling partnership, one a very fast left arm pace bowler and the other very tidy spinner.  Both openers were protecting their wickets well, and Genevieve kept the score ticking over, scoring 8 runs including a four in the first 5 overs before being bowled by the left arm pace bowler.  That bought our Mrs Consistency, Robyn, to the crease.  Robyn and Nat took the score the 29 in the 12 over before Nat was caught for 4 in the 13th over.

Sienna followed Nat back to the sheds shortly after.  Manly needed their middle order to fire to post a competitive total, and fire it did.  Kate had her best rep batting innings so far, putting on 14, Jess playing her first U17 game put on 9 and looking very comfortable out in the middle, Chloe looked strong and smashed 3 fours for a total of 16, and Mia played in her naturally aggressive way scoring a quick fire 13, with Jasmin ending not out for 1.  The total was 102 off 38.2 overs.

Sydney had a very accomplished batting line up, but the Manly girls were their usual enthusiastic selves out in the middle.  Mia and Amelia opened the bowling, with Amelia putting in her best bowling performance of the rep season so for, finishing for 0 for 14 off 6 overs.  Jasmin and Robyn followed, with Robyn bowling very tightly and eventually getting a much-deserved wicket in her second spell in the 38^th over after a great catch by Hannah behind the stumps.  The first breakthrough had come in the 15^th over with Sienna getting the opener lbw after a terrific appeal.  The other Sydney opener, however, would go on to make 100 not out, and the Sydney team would pass Manly’s total in the 24^th over.  With Sydney batting on for bonus points, Jess bowled for the first time for Brewers, and bowled very tidily.  Genevieve bowled 6 overs of leg spin for 24 runs, and Chloe and Kate also bowled in short spells.  Nat and Hannah did a great job behind the stumps, keeping the byes down to 4.  Sydney would end up with 192 off the 40 overs.

While the end result was a comprehensive win for Sydney, there were two big positives to come out of the game for the Manly girls.  Firstly, the girls never gave up and never stopped trying, even after the opposition had passed their total, maintaining their enthusiasm and intensity all the way through the St George innings.  Secondly, the improvement in the girls from week to week in all aspects of the game is amazing to watch and must be very satisfying for the coaches to see.
