Monday News – Rd 8 v Eastern Suburbs – One Dayer + PGs v UNSW – One Dayer

We went into this round needing a boost after a few indifferent weeks. Up against likely CC wooden spooners, Eastern Suburbs, we were wanting 5 from 5 without a doubt. Unfortunately 2nds and 5ths could not get wins so we got up 81 to 42 in the CC battle. PGs followed up with a comfortable win v UNSW. This gave us a small push up the table to 12th but with St George  next we will need to lift to head further north. 1st grade fought hard to get 199 on the board but then put the cleaners through the Chooks to roll them for 129, a similar result in PGs,  3rds toughed it out and got up in a tight one 9 down and 4s got a bonus point win on the back of another excellent bowling/fielding performance.

4 Pines Brewery Player of the Week –     Andrew Lowe

Again a difficult choice due to the lack of any outstanding performance. A whole stack of solid ones though…AB 65 and 3/24, Luke Grant contributing to 4s and PGs, Marshall getting consistent wickets, Rawlings getting runs again, Farrel runs & wickets again,Lowe runs again, SOK holding 1s together with good runs. A very even market but getting the nod is Lowe. He is Mr Consistent with good scores lately and his contribution to a low scoring 2nd grade game almost got them home and then chipping in again for PGs. AB can consider himself unlucky with another great all round performance. 

 

 

1st Grade – Manly 7/199 (ABeadle 65, S Okeefe 61no)  beat Eastern Suburbs 129 ( A Beadle3/24, B Martin 3/27, M Edwards 2/27)

Firsts had another solid win on Saturday beating a struggling Eastern Suburbs outfit. After winning the toss and batting, the Manly boys found themselves in a bit of trouble at 4-46. An excellent partnership then developed between SOK (61*) and AB (65), who both showed excellent patience and application to score tough runs on a slow wicket. The pair added 107, and combined with a Mitch Cleary (20) cameo in the last few overs, our score ended up as 199.

Our opening bowlers Martin and Edwards both got the ball rolling with wickets in their first spell. At 3-11 East’s were on the back foot, and despite some resistance from their Sydney Sixers import Jeevan Mendis, they never recovered.  All the bowlers shared in the spoils, with AB taking the figures with 3-24 off 10.

Another solid win, built on the back of SOK and AB’s partnership with the bat, has the Manly boys in the top 6 in the one day comp and slowly climbing the ladder in the overall two-day comp. A stern challenge awaits this week against St George, however this is a challenge we are looking forward to meeting head on and will give us a good indication of where we stand in the overall scheme of things.

2nd Grade – Manly 184 ( A Lowe 69, J Badyari 42, T Beatty 35) lost to Easts 8/190 (D Marshall 3/43, J Badyari 2/25, L Mannel 2/49) 

Coming off 3 quality wins the 2’s boys rocked up to a beautiful looking Waverly Oval with the hope of continuing our great form heading into the Christmas break.  Marksy won the toss and elected to bat first. With consistent bowling from the Eastern Suburbs openers, we found ourselves 2 for 10 with Watkins and “Anita” Pugh departing early.  From there a gutsy partnership was needed with the pitch offering quite a bit of help for the bowling side. Andrew “Sid” Lowe (69) and Javed “badman” Badyari (42) were the perfect men for the job, both continuing their recent form with the bat putting on a much needed 106 run stand. Javed then departed for a well-made 42 with Lowey falling soon after for another quality half century. Losing 3 quick wickets the Manly boys found themselves with quite a bit of work to do to get the score up to the 200 mark. Taylor “the great man” Beatty and Tom Kaye put on a 50 run partnership with Taylor continuing his form from his 70 in PG’s last Sunday with a much needed 35. Ending the innings bowled out for a sub-par 184 the boys had a quite a bit of work to do in the field.

An outstanding opening spell from both Taylor Beatty (10-0-33) and Luke “Mezza” Mannell (10-2-47) set the pace for the bowling innings with Easts being 2 fa early doors. Followed by tight first change spells by Mitchell “Anita” Pugh (10-1-39) and Javed “badman” Badyari, supported by some outstanding catching from Lowey, we found ourselves well on top with Easts troubled at 5-60. Once Javed and Pughy got tired of snicking guys off, Dylan “Toupee” Marshall came into the attack with a well bowled 3-43 off his 10 overs. Unfortunately from there, some inconsistent bowling combined with Easts lower order batting well and some missed chances, our score was passed with 6 balls to spare.

Heading into the week the boys all know what we need to work on, let’s train hard this week and finish off with a win against St George next Saturday. Lastly thanks to the 4^th grade boys who came to support us after their game, and also to our Scorer Gordie for his tireless efforts, much appreciated!

3rd Grade – Manly 9/228 ( J Rawlings 54, L Weston 54, J Daly 36) beat Easts 226 (B Wilson 3/55, J Graham 2/12, A Virdi 2/41)

3^rd grade arrived at Atmosphere Park for the second week running looking to bounce back from a disappointing result against Randwick-Petersham. After the top five picked up a dominant victory in the pre-game touch footy, Jeanie won the toss and sent Easts in on a wicket that looked like it would offer the quick’s a little early.

The Manly boys didn’t start off too badly with the ball and bowled without luck until Ash (2-41 from 10) dismissed the opener with Ralph Wiggum taking a sharp catch in the gully. In the period before drinks however the Manly boys lost their way a little and allowed the two Easts batsmen to settle in and pick up the run rate. After some talk in the break we returned with an improved attitude in the field along with the ball. Easts made their way to the strong position of 2-160 until Bradley Wilson (3-55 from 10) continued after the second drinks break snaring two wickets in an over. Manly then persisted with the ball eventually bowling Easts out for 226, a strong fight back considering the position we were in. All of the bowlers chipped in with Jeanie (1-45 from 10), Ronnie Davis (1-40 from 8), Wood duck (1-31 from 10) and Jacob Graham (2-12 from 2) all taking wickets. Jordan Daly starred in the field with a solid 4 catches.

Manly’s chase didn’t start too well with Hole being sent back for a globe. Logan (54) and Rawlings “Ralph Wiggum” (54) then combined to rebuild the innings with Logan in particular taking apart the Easts attack. Logan was then dismissed, flicking his pad on the way through to the keeper bringing Jordan to the crease. Ronald McDonald (J Daly) and Wiggum then cleverly worked the ball around in the middle overs taking the score to 154. After an eventful plane crash and visit from Gollum Jordan departed for a well-compiled 36. Wiggum then departed soon after leaving Manly requiring a run-a-ball for the final 10 overs. Jeanie came out and creamed 21 but fell along with Wood duck and Graham. Ash (14) and Rabs (16) both batted well before departing with about 10 to get.

Enter the great Ronnie Davis. After seeing off the second last over Manly required 8 from 6 balls with one wicket in hand. Ronnie worked the ball around nicely while Wilson (1 n.o) did his job and turned the strike over. With 4 off 2 balls required, the Easts bowler overstepped and Ronnie casually walked across his stumps and flicked the ball over mid-wicket for four, sealing a Manly win!

It was a gutsy performance from the boys and a deserved victory; hopefully we can continue with this momentum and take another win into Christmas next week!

4th Grade – Manly 4/118 ( R Farrell 49, L Tully 41no) beat Easts 117( R Farrell 3/18, L Grant 2/16, W Evans 2/20) 

4th grade was at Snape Oval on the weekend. LG did his usual and lost the away toss and we went into the field.  The pitch was dry and crumbled badly at the crease but played fairly true for the whole game. LG and Sheedy did their usual thing and bowled tidily early on and LG even snared an early wicket, much to everyone’s shock and delight. As mentioned in the PGs report Luke has been bowling consistently well in 4s and it was great to see him get another one soon after to have 2/2 from his first 5 overs. He bowled with control and movement and was a handful. Sheeds’ turn will come soon too I reckon as he bowled well and finished with 0/18. He is running in a bit harder and it is showing with the ball coming out nicely, a yard on his earlier season pace. Easts crawled along and did not look too threatening. LG and Evans (2/20) then bowled well in tandem, Evans picking up a snick and a great catch from Sky and sneaking one through the defences to have them 4/40. A small partnership developed, neither bat looking too comfortable against Gardiner (1/23) who, whilst not at a full gallup following hammy & shoulder problems, bowled with good pace. He picked up a slash which was then quickly followed by a run out. Their tail did not have any answers for the spin of Farrell (3/18) or Alexander (1/22) and we were left with 118 to win.

Last week this was probably enough for an outright for Easts but this week, despite the early loss of Sky LBW and Visser letting one go that just nicked the middle of middle stump (well left), we went about it in a much cleaner manner with Farrel (49) and Tully (41no) steering us home almost. Farrel looked the goods and hopefully future captains up the grades will not pidgeon hole this all-rounder as a leggie only. Bats correctly, hits the ball along the ground and is positive. The makings of an opening batsman. Tully survived his 1^st ball (thank goodness) and batted with gusto. Plays a great array of shots once settled and he is someone who in the next year or two will be a player to watch. Evans went in with 15 to win and promptly threw away his wicket as usual. Definitely not a player who deals in averages. BUT he is now making the public declaration that he is sick of wondering why he does it every week and will now put a price on his wicket for the first time in 26 years. He may average more than 10 for the year yet!

We got up with an emphatic bonus point win which has us 13 points out. Sounds a lot but with 8 games to go who knows? We are improving which is the main thing. After the first 3 games we have been in positions to win all 5. If we use those experiences for the rest of the year we’ll win a few more. 3 tough games coming up – we must show ticker against Saints this week. Let’s be prepared by having at least one solid practice.

5th Grade – Manly 132 (W Jonkers 58) lost to Easts 2/133

At the home of cricket, 5th grade were once again confident of a turnaround in performance to test the Double Bay XI. 

Winning the toss and batting, the new combination saw Will Jonkers in a pinch hitting mentoring capacity, with 14 year old Jo Graham. 

The plan worked a treat with Jonkers tearing into the bowling with shots to all parts. Unfortunately Jo was run out, with the score on 30, and it was all downhill from there ! 

Despite the whirlwind 58 from Jonkers, which nearly sent Dollars back to hospital, no one else threatened and we were out for 132. 

The Bondi visitors never threatened to tear us apart, and batted sedately to pass the score in about 40 overs, 2 down. 

Another disappointing performance, but  looking forward to Santa bringing a few runs for everyone next week !

PGs – Manly 9/197 (T Kaye 40, L Weston 35, A Lowe 29, L Grant 25) beat UNSW 133 ( D Marshall 3/41, M McLachlan 2/20, L Grant 2/22, T Beatty 2/30)

The boys turned up on an out-bloody-standing sunny Sunday morning at Manly Oval to take on UNSW. Skipper Pughy lost the toss and we were sent in on a curious looking Manly deck. Pughy, Webber and Badyari all went without causing Langdon many problems before English import Logan Weston and Andrew “Ralphie” Lowe resurrected the innings. The lads worked hard against UNSW’s army of spinners before both got themselves out in the 30’s and all of a sudden we were 5/90. For once, Taylor ‘the man’ Beatty didn’t score runs, and it was left to Tommy Kaye and Luke Grant around the 30 over mark. The boys took few risks and ran well to push a poor total into a competitive one. Kaye fell for a fine 40 and Grant out slogging at the death for 25. McLachlan also manipulated the backward v to scrap 15 not out. When Marshall was absolutely clean bowled off the last ball, the lads finished with a very competitive 9/197 off their 50.

 Mickey ‘Falcor’ Edwards started with a very quick maiden before Lukey Grant, the PG’s top wicket taker for the year, proceeded to nick-off both openers with absolute jaffas. Lukey has probably been our most under-rated bowler this year in a very strong attack and has always come through with the goods. McLachlan started with a short wide one which the number three decided to edge through the keeper and then Taylor ‘the man’ Beatty closed the game out taking numbers 4 and 5 in the one over. What a great bloke. So good, so so good. Advanced hair studio’s latest signing Dylan ‘the rug’ Marshall then came on and snared three, while McLachlan got some assistance from the deck to take his second. Edwards came back on to take the last wicket and the lads recorded a comfortable victory.

 So all of a sudden we’ve gone from 0/4 to winning two in a row. To be honest we didn’t even bat or field nearly to our potential today and still recorded a comfortable victory against a team that was surprisingly above us on the table. Hopefully we can make it 3/7 with our last game in January.
