Brutal Mendel Hundred Brings Home the Silverware for Fourth Grade – Weekend Wrap 2nd April 2022

The 2021/22 reached it’s epic climax on Saturday for the Manly Warringah Waratahs with victory in the 4th Grade decider.

Andrew Rochford and his side were simply too good for Minor Premiers Parramatta, coasting to a 7 wicket win to claim the Reid cup for only the 3rd time in our history.

The celebrations on Saturday night were epic. Nude laps, good times and plenty of laughs were had. It was a victory of epic proportions after finishing 5th and needing to win all 3 Finals games in take the Premiership.

But take the premiership we did.

Congratulations to Parramatta on a great season, and to all the other winners over the weekend. Mosman in Men’s 1st and 2nd Grade (Wow), Sydney in Women’s 1st Grade, Northern Districts in Men’s 3rd Grade and Easts in Men’s 5th Grade

4 Pines Player of the Week

Brynn Mendel - 105

Considering the circumstances, Brynn’s knock will go down in history as one of best ever knocks. It was a match winning hundred, a premiership winning hundred.

Brynn has always been able to hit the ball well, but he took his game to another level on Saturday with a commanding performance. A few words were said at the beginning of his innings (check out his first 6 in the highlights) and that drove Brynn all through his stay at the crease.

Everyone at the ground said it was one of the best innings they have ever seen. Timing at the start of the innings, and brutal hitting at the tail end. Well done Brynn.

Fourth Grade

Parramatta 180 (Kerr 4/33, Cooper 2/33, Hobson 2/35) def. by Manly-Warringah 3-185 (B. Mendel 105, Charles 48*)

W

ith the weekend weather and our position as the lower ranked side, our 4th Grade men arrived at Hurstville Oval hoping that the ground had survived much of the rain we have seen recently. Certainly the pitch was a good one, but with the square a little muddy, the 10am start was delayed.

With an 11.30am look from the umpires, it was decided on a 42 over match starting at 12.15pm

Skipper Rochford won the toss and chose to bowl.

It was a slow start from Parramatta but we they got to the 50 mark they began to accelerate, and being only 1 down for 98 at the half way mark meant they were looking at a 200 plus score.

However the introduction of Lachie Kerr slowed their progress. He bowled a fantastic spell to capture 4 wickets, and along with some great ‘keeping from Oscar Lucius and support from Jack Hobson and Josh Cooper with 2fa each, Parramatta were only able to scramble to 180.

Everyone thought it was a par score, but as we all know, runs on the scoreboard are like gold in big matches. Nobody told this to Brynn Mendel. For the next 2 hours, he tore the Parramatta attack apart. Strong cut and square drives through point were the highlight of his early innings, but as he got going he began to bludgeon the ball, putting it to all parts of the ground in a brutal display of power hitting.

With great support from Lachlan Charles (48*) we ran down the required runs off only 33.1 overs.

What a display from the Manly boys, only our 3rd ever 4th Grade Premiership after victories in 1974/75 and 2017/18. Congratulations to skipper Andrew Rochford and the entire team, coaches and volunteers on a brilliant season. See you in 2022/23
