Another weekend where rain won by the length of the straight.
No play was possible in any of the Men’s grades on Saturday or Sunday, while almost all of the Women’s grade were called off.
Ironically it was W3s, playing at Balgowlah Oval, who were the only side to get on. How the ground stood up to the late week rain we’ll never know. But we are glad it did as we came away with a pulsating 2 run victory over North Sydney. We go straight to the top of the table.
It’s the start of the season we all crave, let’s hope Renee Hough’s team can continue their winning ways.
Renee Hough takes out our Seadrift Distillery Female Player of the Week.
It was her swashbuckling 26* off 28 balls that rounded out W3s innings so perfectly. We were behind the eight ball slightly but she ensured we had a defendable T20 total, making sure she was there at the end.
But it was also her mature captaincy that also ensured the win, making sure her side was calm under pressure to ultimately delivery the win over our North Sydney rivals.
riday morning at work, my manager asks me to work on Saturday because “there’s no chance you will be playing cricket”. *Hammers down with rain*. Saturday morning 8am, the skippers tells us we’re on. A miracle really.
Because my boss was so in my head that we weren’t playing cricket I had to duck up to the shops and grab my share of the tea we were going to be putting together and find where my cricket clothes were.
Anyway, after some brilliant warm up tunes, a great warm up and a tear-jerking motivational chat from Matty we won the toss and elected to bat.
Steph and Annabelle opened the batting. After an early wicket, Steph and Emily settled in, not offering much remorse for the North Sydney bowlers. After an inspiring knock, it was Steph’s time to depart getting 25 off 26 deliveries. Skipper Renee was next to come in and at a crucial time she really stood up and got the run rate going, highlight was her monster 6 she hit almost getting to the golf course.
After a great innings Emily retired on 30 off 61 deliveries! Didi came in with only an over to go and her along with Renee finished the innings on 99. We knew it was going to be tight, but we knew we had it in us to win the game.
Manly debutant Chloe opened the bowling against her old club, almost getting a wicket first ball and then almost getting another 3rd ball! 3rd grade debutants Sophia and Jamie bowled some great overs in the middle overs as did CP and Annabelle.
The skipper bowled herself a couple overs and got a crucial wicket when we needed it.
North Sydney needed 8 of the last 2 overs and Jamie really stood up, bowling a maiden and putting an immense amount of pressure on the bowlers. We ended winning by 5 runs.
Whilst the rain definitely dampened the ball quite severely, the girls found a way to keep composed and win the game, not letting the rain or pressure get the best of us.
