Ton on Vumbaca’s Twenty First Highlight of Winning Weekend for Manly – Weekend Wrap 12/13 Dec 2020

It was a chilly summers day out at the Raby Sports complex, on a confusing wicket the home side won the toss and sent the Tahs in for a stick.

Openers Foster and Bryant again did a brilliant job seeing off the opening bowlers on a difficult wicket with some high quality fast bowling, unfortunately just after the drinks break we lost both our openers. Jay Lenton came to the crease with Cam Merchant and the experienced pair batted through until lunch. Unfortunately after lunch we lost a few wickets pretty close together with the skip being dismissed for a well made 43. Nappa and AB fell shortly after which provided an opportunity for the new brigade to make their mark on the top grade. Sully and Isiah batted well and saw out a tough few overs. Silly unfortunately edged one to the keeper pulling for a very important 15.

Vumbaca and Herd changed the game from there on with things looking a little dodgy at 6-136. These two combined for an 120 run partnership and a key part in Manly putting up a respectable total.

It took until the last over of the day for one of the best moments of the season when Izzy Vumbaca blasted one through mid off to bring up his Maiden first grade Century! Ryan Hadley was also run out for a diamond duck in that over.

Big last day before Christmas for the Tahs!

The lads arrive at beautiful Manly Oval on Saturday morning with a lot of magical energy and love. After seeing the pitch Mr Jamieson decided that if he wins the toss we will have a bowl, and that we did.

Jamieson and Counsell started up and had the Campbelltown top order trembling with the ball doing quite a bit. Early wickets were key and we managed to have Campbelltown reeling at 3-18. From then it was a class act from the manly boys, showing why we are the competition leaders. With constant wickets from both end from the whole bowling cartel, we managed to roll Campbelltown for 127 just before tea. Credit to the bowlers who stuck to our plans throughout the entire innings.

There were 40 overs left in the day and with a bit of rain forecasted for next week we new that getting the 6 points would be crucial. Weston and Brewster lead the charge. Weston was unfortunately dismissed early after edging one to the cordon. It was then the Brewster Davies show, taking the game on with some unbelievable batting. These two batted with selflessness and put the boys in an awesome position. We passed Campbelltown 1 down and pressed on to score some more quick runs. Davies (78) and Brewster (68) were both dismissed with us leading by 30 or so. A couple of blows from our middle order and Jamieson decided we should have another bowl at them, because no one wants to get out twice in one day.

We declared at 5-172 leading by 45. There were 7 overs left in the day and we knew that a wicket or two would be the icing on the cake. And with Jamieson’s first ball we had one! The batsmen left one and it cannoned into his front pad! Salmon! The boys kept hitting there spots asking a lot of the batsmen for the 7 overs.

Campbelltown finished the day 1-14. 6 points for lads with a huge opportunity for 10 next week to stay in 1st at the Christmas break!

Zach Trewartha

Looking to bounce back from a disappointing defeat last time out, 3s welcomed Penrith to Graham’s on a mild and temperate Saturday morning. Skipper Sammy Hole lost another toss but with the desired result achieved, the Tahs were walking out to bat a little before 10am. 

Penrith, however, seemed to be ill-affected having crossed half the continent and took two early wickets with both Webber’s falling to their openers. Prowse and Wheeler took to the crease to steady the ship and started to build a promising partnership before both fell shortly after drinks. 

Charlesy and Boults rebuilt, effortlessly caressing the spinners around to get us towards a competitive score. Despite the overcast conditions, there was still time for a BBQ as Boults was unfortunately run  out and Charlesy joined him back in the sheds soon after for a well made 46. Roop and Wiggers put on a vital 20 odd to bring us to 163.

The bowling effort started off brightly with a couple of early poles and with the Panthers trying to rebuild Roop and Boults bowled superbly to build pressure and consistently pick up wickets. To see two young lads (half the age of certain players) show such maturity and consistency is a fantastic sign of things to come. With their skipper posing the main threat, we chipped away at the other end and it was eventually left to Wiggers to pole the number 11 and win the game. 

A resounding victory in the end against 2nd in the ladder but plenty to work on for the batters and with an expedition to Campbelltown next weekend, 3s will have a busy week at training and preparing supplies for their travels ahead.

Round 7 witnessed the 4th grade Manly boys take on Penrith at Bill Ball Oval. At the toss, the coin flipped in favour of Penrith, who invited Manly to bat. The Manly skipper Gummer was more than happy to set a grand total. But the skippers enthusiasm vehemently backfired courtesy of the tight bowling and fielding from Penrith.

Manly was dented quickly as they were reduced to 126. While the boys tried their best, Jack Melchiore troubled the scorers with a hearty 38 until he was run out.

Dunnachie provided some relief by clobbering a few boundaries to take us to an under par score.

On the contrary, Manly’s bowling unit looked the strongest it had all year. The paceman were all firing. Consistent. Economical. Chasing only a tad over 2 an over, the boys could only do so much. With the first wicket falling at 59, it was always going to be a tough task to restrain them. On a lighter note, the appearance of Cohens unorthodox left arm slingers ended the game on a lighter note.

A lot of lessons learnt today. Onwards and upwards.

Manly 5th Grade, pumped up and hungry for a win, were sent in to bowl first against Penrith on a reasonably flat Mike Pawley wicket. With the new ball, Andrew Rochford (The Doc) looked in great control using cross-seam and swing to tie up the Penrith opening bat.

After a few great quality overs from Darcy up the other end, the Doc brought a fine nick to keeper Dunlop to get the wicket column moving. The Penrith batsmen had some luck early hitting the gaps with a fast outfield. A great change up of Liam Dinan and Simon Waddington each picking up a wicket with some great line and length. The spin twins were brought on to tighten the ship with Damon Smith and Raj Ganeshraj producing some magical off spin from both ends for 20 overs straight. With only 1 wicket in this middle 20 to Damon, Raj was again left incredibly unlucky not have picked up a grade wicket yet. With Dinan and Waddington coming back on after the spin twins they had an immediate effect with a wicket each. In the last few remaining overs the Penrith batsmen were pushing 2’s to our deep fielders. Liam Dinan our long off had extreme effect with a laser throw direct hit run out from the boundary. The same shot the next ball later brought the Penrith new batsmen running 2, to Dinan on the fence again… déjà Vu and Dinan whips the ball in to the stumps for a second almost identical run out with Waddignton taking the bails at the stumps. Finishing up with Penrith 8/216.

Opening the batting Reiley Dunlop and Billy O’Brien walked out with a solid game plan and raring to go. Facing up first, Dunlop fell to a swinging ball second ball of the match to a second slip catch. And O’Brien fell almost identically to the same bowler 4 overs later to a second slip catch. John Warn batting in his 200th Manly Innings walked out confidently as our number 3 and had instant effect. Blasting 42 runs at a run a ball, with Jake Hutchings by his side. Jake fell for 2 after facing some good quality bowling and Warn was undone 2 runs later. Damon Smith walked out also confident to get the manly boys to 217 joined by Keelan Mendel. Both looked in fine touch with Damon blasting 32 and Keelan moving the ball into gaps for 19. Damon and Keelan both brought undone had Waddington And Rochford steady the ship. The Doc at his usual swashbuckling self took to dismantling the Penrith mid-late over attack. Waddington caught for a ball going for 6 had Dinan and Rochford battle it out for the Manly boys at a score now at 135. Rochford Hitting boundaries, Dinan keeping him on strike and scoring a plethora of 2’s kept us in the game. Over after over Dinan and Rochford battled it out. With the Doc bringing up his 50 and the Manly boys pushing past 200 with a Rochford 6 hit over all the spectators heads and high into the trees. Rochford finishing the game with a 4 hit down the ground and at a score of 75 not out off 54 and Liam Dinan 22 not out off 29 balls was a masterclass in grit and determination to bring us up from close defeat to an amazing victory against the second placed Penrith side. Great win from the Manly 5th grade team and if there was a player of the match to be had it would be Dinan with his double run out, double wicket with the ball and disciplined innings with the bat to get us over the line when it mattered the most.

Reiley Dunlop

The day started off with a phenomenal breakfast at market lane. With a great start to the day we then headed over to Manly Oval to be play Sydney. With the likes of Ollie Davies and Jack Edwards in the Big Bash bubble and a few injuries, we welcomed in Jack Melchiore and Liam Dinan to make their PGs debuts. 

Joel Foster lost the toss and the boys were in the field. Foster and Evan Dunnachie started of well with out any luck.  The break through came from Joel Davies getting the first wicket, closely followed by another wicket from Jacob O’Sullivan. We kept toiling away at the Sydney batsmen with a couple wickets here and there from Isaiah Vumbaca, Lachie Trewartha and Jacob O’Sullivan, including a direct hit run out from Trewartha. Sydney finishing their 50 overs with 7-249, a competitive total for us to chase down. 

Joel Foster and Matt Brewster opened the batting. The two looked very good at the start before losing Foster. This brought Joel Davies to the crease who combined beautifully with Brewster, just like the day before. Joel and Matt put on just under 100 to have us in the box seat. Unfortunately, Brewster fell (45) and then Joel (78) shortly after. Jacob O’Sullivan (35) was the next bloke to look good before losing his wicket. After this, we lost wickets pretty consistently to be all out for 219.

Not the result we were looking for, but hoping to bounce back next game.

Lachie Trewartha 

The Manly girls turned up at Grahame Thomas oval Bankstown and were met with a slow patchy green wicket but fast outfield. After losing the toss we were sent in to the field.

Chelsea and Kate opened the bowling. Some tight bowling and amazing fielding saw the Bankstown girls frustrated and feeling the pressure early on in the innings. The game was then set up when off a free hit Kate and Ruby affected an amazing runout to have Bankstown 1-15. Kate then followed up by clean bowling their number 3. With the game in Manly’s favour, Emily then came on to bowl and with a middle stump yorker dismissed their number 4 and not long after also bowled their number 5. After that wickets kept falling with Jess bowling their 2nd top scorer and Abbey bowling utilising the low slow pitch and picking up three wickets with the help of two amazing catches from Chloe and Kate. With Sally also taking a wicket and Eliza getting out their top scoring batter, Bankstown were all out in the 36th over for just 100 runs.

After a quick lunch and some throw downs our openers Chloe and Nat were walking back out to the middle. Nat was unfortunately dismissed first ball of the game with a ball that didn’t bounce very much. This brought Ellie in who steadied the ship with a partnership with Chloe of 26 before she then got out LBW to another ball the didn’t bounce very much. Not to long after that Chloe was also dismissed bowled for 18. This saw Manly  3 for 37 in a run chase of just 101. A few nerves started to ruse in the dugout however they soon disappeared as Kate and Eliza putt on a partnership of 54. Unfortunately they were not able to bring it home and Kate was dismissed for 38 and Eliza for 20 with not many more runs to get. This had Mia and Ruby at the crease for the winning runs.

It was an exciting day ending up with a win and one of our best fielding performances yet. It was then into the sheds to sing the team song. Hopefully the Brewers team can keep up these fielding standards in our t20 game next week.
