Tough Weekend for the Women but Men Find Form – Weekend Wrap 15th/16th January 2022

Manly took on Fairfield Liverpool in Round 9 at Manly Oval which saw the return of Matt Brewster and Ahillen Beadle following their COVID isolations as well as Hurricanes BBL representative Tom Lamonnby.
Fairfield won the toss and elected to bowl thinking batting second would assist with the potential rain forecasted for the afternoon.  Manly definitely did not get off to the start they envisaged being 3-28 after the first 10 overs following some good bowling from Fairfield’s opening bowlers. Despite the loss of early wickets Manly had confidence in Ahillen Beadle and Joel Davies who had proven two rounds prior to be a formidable partnership in this year’s 1st Grade competition. It was this left handed partnership of master and apprentice that again shone for Manly turning their difficult start into a 171 run partnership.  Joel’s superb innings would unfortunately come to an end on 91. Bryant then came to the crease playing a supporting role to Beadle who was showing Fairfield exactly why he had been selected in Premier Cricket Team of the Century. Beadle then brought up his first hundred in 3 years in the 49th over eventually finishing 107 not out.  Manly posted 5-258.

Knowing the importance of taking early wickets with the looming rain around Ryan Hadley wasted no time taking a wicket on the first ball of the innings. This was followed at the other end by Greg West who got rid of Fairfield’s danger man Liam Hatcher. With the score 2-2 the bowling onslaught continued with wickets falling consistently every couple of overs.  Jake Carden then carried on his consistent line and length bowling from the week before joining the other two quicks with a few wickets of his own. Tom Lammonby’s left arm swingers also proved a handful picking up a cheeky wicket. (Carden 3-19, West 3-25, Hadley 3-28, Lammonby 1-10).

Manly would go on to win the fixture bowling Fairfield out for 86 in the 23rd over,  taking home a handy bonus point to put Manly 4th in the 1st Grade competition

The boys arrived to Rosedale Oval on a warm muggy Saturday. Skipper Jamieson won the toss and the Manly boys were going to bowl first.

Early wickets and pressure were going to be key as we’ve done multiple times this season. On a slowish wicket and outfield, the Fairfield openers started alright. They put on about 50 before Jamieson took the first scalp. Not long later Tom Kaye, back from his covid break, took the second. Wickets came and a steady pass as did the runs. Fairfield were 6-134 before a bit of hard hitting and some not so great execution from our bowlers meant they got to 7-200 after their 50.

After chasing well against St George a week before, we had the blueprint of how to chase this down. Logan was unfortunately dismissed early in the run chase for 3. Ned and Jacob put the pressure back on Fairfield to get the boys to 1-67 before Ned was out. A flurry of wickets fell and we suddenly saw ourselves 6-101. Requiring 100 off about 20 overs with Jacob and Jamieson at the crease, we knew we needed something special from those two. Jacob held our innings together to finish 72* and Jamieson whacked his way to 60 off 53 balls. Unfortunately for Jamo he tried to be a hero when we needed just 6 to win. We passed the Fairfield total 7 down with 3 overs to spare.

3 wins on the bounce for the 2s boys and puts us up to 4th leading into the business end of the season!

The threes boys rocked up to a picturesque grahams oval with 6 points at front of mind. The pitch was green and looked like a bowl first wicket. We ended up batting.

Coyte (28)  and hole (54) opened up and set up an amazing platform for the manly boys. Patiently starting their innings before some flare was shown from both batters. Dom wheeler (24) then came to the crease and joined sam to continue pushing along the run rate and got the manly boys to drinks with a fantastic platform. Dom continued to push the runs before falling to a sharp catch. Charles then came to the crease…. Webber then came to the crease and joined hole in creating a fantastic batting innings. Hole fell to a sharp chance in the deep allowing for the big hitting E Raymond (69). The Manly boys had an absolute pleasure of watching the young man hit the Fairfield attack to all parts of the ground. Some late order hitting joined and got the manly boys to 240.

Bain and Ev started the innings off and built pressure immediately. An early pole to Bain saw the manly boys start a roll with the ball. Trewartha and Rhoop further took the manly boys closer to the win with Rhoop helping himself to 4.  

All in all a fantastic result rolling fairlfeild for just over 100 and earning a much needed bonus point. Onto next week and looking for the same result.

The 4s boys were privileged to have a rest on Saturday as they took the drive out to Rosedale oval against Fairfield Liverpool on Sunday. Skipper Andrew Rochford won the toss (finally) and elected to bat first on what seemed a flat deck. Unfortunately the boys didn’t get off to a good start consistently losing wickets with Oscar Lucius weathering out the storm with a gritty 24. At 7-74 the total was looking not too good but an incredible partnership from Oliver Melville (42) and Lachlan Kerr (28) and support from the tail got the team up to 168 with 8 balls left.

Knowing we were maybe 30 under a good score we knew early wickets would be key and skipper Rochford went above and behind bowling 10 straight and taking the first 6 wickets with remarkable figures of 6-28. An outstanding runout from Jack Pickering and well earned wicket from Lachlan Kerr had them 8 down for 71 with Cooper burgling the last 2 wickets.

Overall a surprising bonus point win after being 7-74.

We arrived back home at Mike Pawley after the Christmas break. Initial sights didn’t look promising with rain forecasted and outfield quite wet on arrival but some quick super soaping and a positive mindset from the umpires ensured we would get on at 10am. The toss was won by Reiley and we elected to bat first on what looked a untypical MP wicket that was slightly soft along with a slow, luscious outfield to go with it. We welcomed 2 debutants George Cumming and Brodie McDowell from the country as well.

Bailey and Hayden opened the innings with the boys hoping they would get us off to the start we got from them 2 rounds ago against Bankstown. Our leading run getter Hayden got run out going for a 3rd and the innings went downhill from there. There was no substantial partnerships with no partnerships able to apply themselves and bat time. Brodie was the stand out batsmen with his exquisite sweep-shots and aggressive running ending up on 53 to help us scrap to a total of 119. He was assisted by Reiley in the middle who got 18 whilst no other batsmen could reach double digits.

After the lunch break, it was the bowlers turn to try to defend this score of 119 which had to be done by taking 10 wickets. James Waddington got us off to the best possible start taking a wicket in the first over to bring the life back into the boys. Josh Lawson continued from the other end, both looking attacking but bowling too many wides to release the pressure from the in batsmen. James finished with 1-27 off his 7 overs. Will Matheson was introduced into the attack and bowled with great intensity and good lines taking 1-11 off his 6 overs. Simon then came on and bowled with good aggression and skill, however occasionally lacked control with a few wides to release the pressure. The new spin twins were then brought on with debutant George starting well in his first game, bowling with good confidence taking 0-20 off his 5 overs. Raja also bowled with great control keeping it tight from one end finishing with 1-21 off his 10 overs. Josh bowled an excellent 2nd spell building good pressure combining with Raja to take 1-24 off his 10 overs. Overall, the bowling effort lacked discipline in the initial patch conceding too many sundries but finished well to show that we had learned from our mistakes. The lack of scoreboard pressure made it easy for the opposition batsmen to get to the total without taking too many risks which made it difficult for the bowlers. We did well to take the game to the 43rd over having the worst of the conditions and we have discussed as a bowling group to know where we can improve for next time in regards to extras and plans.

In summary, it was a tough day’s play and we were not sharp enough with our skill set having the worst of the conditions since the sun came out in the afternoon to harden and flatten the deck. We have fallen to 8th on the table and will need to play consistent winning cricket in the rounds to come to have a chance at finals. We will go back to the drawing board and see where we need to improve in terms of the team composition and individual skills.

Pink Stumps Day was in full swing as the first grade team hit the field. Penrith had a stacked top order, looking for early wickets, Annie picked up the key wicket of the opening batter with a clever catch by Mikaela. The girls kept the bowling tight, Mikaela finding the next breakthrough to put pressure onto the new batter. Penrith then found a solid partnership until Laura stepped to the crease. With a textbook catch by Shiv, Laura claimed a key wicket. 

Penriths’ 3rd Batter began to find some comfort on the crease, and a potential big total was looming. However, tight bowling from the Captain and a run out from Kate placed Manly back in control.  Great depth bowling from Christie and Charley saw the dangerous batter walking back to the grandstand and put pressure on Penrith’s tail. A good effort from the fielding Manly team saw Penrith 7/108.

The Manly girls were keen for a bat, especially the birthday girls, Mik and Nat. Second ball from Penriths opener saw Nat dismissed after a denied LBW shout provided a stumping opportunity as Nat strolled out of her crease. Wickets fell in concession, with Mik and Sas dismissed in the first two openers, to a deck that stayed low. 

Shiv stayed strong at the crease, placing pressure on Penriths bowling attack as wickets continued to fall around her. Shiv and Annabelle formed a strong partnership, seeing the scoreboard continuing to be ticked over. Despite Annie being dismissed from a direct hit, Zara joined Shiv at the crease, continuing to alternate the strike and challenging Penriths’ fielding. The momentum of Shiv and Zara’s partnership of 38 continued as Laura found her way to crease. Shiv and Laura saw the game to the last over, where Shiv made her maiden half century for Manly. With two runs to win, Shiv unluckily struck the ball to the fielder at Mid-off. 

Despite the close loss, Manly were very impressed with Shivs’ tough batting and tight bowling from Charley, Kristie and Laura.

This weeks game, the Women’s Second Grade team played a T20 at Manly Oval against Penrith.
Our Captain Nat Guyot won the toss and elected to bat, after seeing the Brewers girls do well with batting the game before.

Opening the batting was Nat and Zara, with Zara being dismissed early, with 4 runs of 15 balls Niamh was next in at 3. Soon after Niamh was stumped with11 runs off 12 balls with Kate to come in next. Unfortunately things didn’t go our way as another wicket occurred sending Kate back to the sheds. Ellie and Nat then developed a strong partnership helping the strike rate tick over, but was soon cut short with the wicket of Ellie only getting 10 runs off 20 balls. Manly finished off the day with 80 runs with our Captain Nat top scoring with 42 runs off 58 balls.

With a quick turnaround our bowlers were ready for the attack with Mia W and Kate S to open the bowling. Mia got the first wicket from a catch by Ellie at cover finishing her spell of 1 for 6 off 2 overs. First change was Kristie C and Jas W, conceding no wickets but restricted their runs with Kristie getting 0 for 14 off 2 overs and Jas 0 for 11 off 2. Next in for the attack was Claire and Niamh, Claire getting the next wicket resulting with her figures of 1 for 12 off 1.5 overs and Niamh 0 for 21 off 2.

Penrith scored the 80 runs 11 overs with only the loss of 2 wickets resulting in a tough day for the second grade girls at Manly Oval.

Manly lost the toss and were sent in to bowl by Penrith. A solid opening partnership by Maya Nicey and Emily Horstead got us to 22 before losing 4 wickets for only 30 runs. The innings was saved by a 44 run partnership between Mia Nel and Caitlin du Preez, leaving us with 6-98 after 20. Mia played a superb innings with a Manly top score of 31 off 26.

With a small total to defend Darcey Whiteley got us off to a perfect start with a maiden. This set the tone with the first 10 overs yielding only 35 runs. The first breakthrough came thanks to Eliza Henry in the 7th over with Mia Nell taking the catch. 4 runs later another breakthrough this time by the captain Mia Nel in a wicket maiden. A direct hit run out by Darcy Whiteley and excellent bowling by Mia Nel and Emily Horstead taking a combined 3 wickets in the 17th and 18th. In the end we won by 7 runs.
