What a Weekend as Waratahs Pull off Ten from Ten – Weekend Wrap 22nd/23rd January 2022

First grade continues their winning ways.

Manly hosted Campbelltown and were sent in to bat on what looked to be a good day for batting.

A wicket fell in the second over, which then saw AhillenBeadle and Ryan Farrell put on a batting masterclass, combining for a partnership worth 161. AB was dismissed for a well-made 68, continuing his purple patch of form, and young gun Joel Davies continued the momentum for the tah’sbatting alongside Farrell. Stand in skipper Faz played a captains knock, eventually being dismissed for 90, with contributions from Ben Bryant and the middle order to elevate our score to 5/254 at the innings end. 

It was the bowlers turn, and Ryan Hadley made light work of Campbelltown’s top order, taking wickets early doors and looked a cut above the opposition, with Campbelltown 4/12 in chasing. 

Herd, Davies and Carden bowled in partnerships throughout the middle period and drove the required run rate up, taking wickets along the way. The bowlers continued to attack and eventually dismissed Campbelltown for 139, picking up a bonus point, and bowling a team out for a fourth consecutive game.

M2s steam rolled into Raby. Unfortunately they’re roller didn’t move over. The game delayed by 30 mins due to a malfunction from their heavy roller. The pitch looked questionable and with that in mind Jamo won the toss and bowled. We quickly realised this worry about the conditions was unnecessary and manly got to work on what looked like a fairly good wicket. Our early bowling was once again good without being great and we were unable to take an early wicket. They’re openers were unable to get away though. Trickling by at 2 an over before yours truly took a wicket just before drinks. A first caught and bowled for the club. From there on the boys rallied and excellent spells from Counsell, Kaye, Wigney, Jamieson and Gainsford broke the Ghosts young batting lineup. Counsell bowling the number 3 with an in swinging peach and TK the pick of the bowlers with wickets and an economy of under 2. The question to the readers are Vernon clones Kaye and Carden the hardest bowlers to face in grade cricket. And batsman. What is your plan? The Ghosts Slumping from 1/80 to 7/150 off their 50 overs. A brutal and very consistent attack on a team that has been struggling for runs this year. Our turn with the bay however did not get off to an ideal start however with seasoned openers Hole and Weston falling cheaply to the opening bowlers. Gainsford and Cam ‘Dreamer’ Merchant however imposing their authority on the game. Both hitting aggressive cover drives for 4 and 2 of their first deliveries at the crease. From there a partnership of 90 demoralised the ghosts who’s lack of depth proved costly with Manly cantering to victory thanks to Gainsford 58 and Merchant 60*. Zach Trewartha with a late cameo to end the ghosts suffering sooner with a quick fire 17*. Manly 5/5 in a clinical performance and 2s are 4 on the trot. Manly win and we roll.

The threes boys showed up to Graham’s confident after the previous round’s win and ready to take some momentum through into the back half of the season. Some slight wet patches in the pitch and a green covering influencing the decision to bowl first. 

The Ghosts got off to a bit of a flyer starting their innings 0/55 off 10. Prowse and Bain pegged the batters back and built some pressure for Bain to take the first wicket, then Prowse the next heavily assisted by a great catch from Dom Wheeler. This set the platform for Roop Dhillon to come through and rip through the middle order, taking 3 wickets in one over and finishing with 4/28. Bain (3/30) and Prowse (3/15) came back to clean up the tail to have them all out for 141.

The boys started off conservatively with the bat, with a couple of small partnerships to begin, setting the platform for Sam Hole (39*) and Jordan Daly (61* off 44) to get to work, punishing the bad bowling with the boys chasing the total 2 down in the 24th over to secure back to back bonus point wins. Also a special mention to Ellis Raymond for his TFC.

There was a slight drizzle over the entirety of Sydney and a big wet patch on the pitch. There were question marks about the timing of the start at Raby oval against the Ghosts but the morning was well officiated, the Tahs prepared and we were bowling with first ball at 10am. Top 6 had a commanding victory in touch footy and intensity in the warm-up was high.

Andrew Rochford and Jack Hobson started up with the ball. Both moved the ball laterally and were often too good to find the edge of the Campbelltown bat. Lots of balls landing near fielders, plays and misses and close shouts to no avail prior to the first drinks break. Lachie Kerr continued after the drinks break with immediate effect taking the edge of the opening batsmen and taking a second wicket in the same over. A couple of poles through the middle overs and Liam Dinan tied the Ghosts down from the other end. A partnership built, the Tahs toiled and eventually uncorked the genie. Highlights towards the end of the innings included a good catch down at 3rd man by Lachie Charles, lovely shapes through the air from Adam Parkinson and Josh Cooper and a late flurry of wickets for Andrew Rochford who finished with 4. 

Chasing 147 on a remarkably spongy, slow outfield was more like 180 to 200. We battled early but unfortunately, Keelan Mendel edged one and was given, Lachie Charles got a good ball and Oscar Lucius was skittled after an hour’s hard work. Jack Pickering struck the ball well throughout his innings, chancing his arm to great success. He accessed all parts of the ground as he was made to run all but 8 of his 78 runs. We stayed on the run rate for 40 overs as wickets slowly fell at the other end to Jack but he was able to keep playing his shots and keep the score rolling. The final partnership with Lachie Kerr was the decisive blow for the Waratahs that got us over the line.

Mike Pawley was in great knick after a damp week, and 5’s were raring to creep back inside the top 6 with a win. Skipper Dunlop won the toss and opted for a stick. Dunlop and Calvert took the score to 56 without loss before Hayden had his pegs rattled on 29. From there the tahs really took the game away from the ghosts, with Dunlop and Melchiore both posting half centuries. Hutchings got going and completely dismantled the attack with 39 off 31 rocks. Melville and McDowell both posted handy cameos in the last 5, taking the score to 5-242.

A great bowling partnership from James Waddington and Melville saw the first wicket fall with a snick, bowled Melville caught Dunlop. Pressure from these two then led to a mix up, with the score now 2-29. The Ganeshraj-Cummings spin duo were brought on to bowl the next 20 from both ends, and what a job they did to dismantle the middle order. Both snared 2 each to rip the heart out of the middle order, and keep things tight. A wicket to Matheson and 2 more runouts took the score to 9-142 after the ghosts 50. A much needed bonus point was achieved for the tahs, and that sees us sneak into 4th place with 5 rounds to go.

The Greenies boys descended on Chatswood Oval for a crunch match quarter final against the fourth placed Gordon. Rain greeted the Manly side, with the BOM’s forecast of very little rain seeming more unreliable by the minute. After some unforeseeable changes throughout the week, Robbie Tipton and Lewis Whiley were presented their debut caps, both with tremendous potential which will hold Manly in good stead in the future. The rain finally eased, with the coin tossed at 9.45am, skipper Roop Dhillon surprising us all by calling correctly, Manly to bat first. Roop and Jack Donnan opened the innings and started positively, taking advantage of the quick outfield to get the Manly boys off to a flying start. Both batted with great intent, running hard between the wickets and putting away any loose deliveries, as Roop powered to 50 off 45 balls. The rain pelted down again, forcing a slight delay, Manly 0/100 after 17 overs. Following the delay, the two set about continuing to build on their platform, as Roop moved into the 80’s and Jack brought up a classy half century. Unfortunately, Roop departed at 84, ending a brilliant 156 run opening partnership. Jake Hutchings came to the crease and immediately resumed his good form, rotating the strike regularly, before Jack was undone by a spectacular piece of fielding from the Gordon wicket keeper to be run out for 57. Andrew Boulton was the new batsman after a lengthy time out with injury, but didn’t look out of touch from the first ball he faced. He and Jake combined for a further 55 runs, Andrew peppering the boundary a couple of times while Jake continued ticking the score over. Andrew was caught behind for 26 off 30 balls, bringing Ethan Buchanan to the crease to close out the innings. Jake brought up a run a ball half century, his fourth in this Greenies season, while Ethan hit some brutal boundaries to see the Manly boys finish with 3/263 off 50 overs. 

 

After a strong warm up, Josh Lawson struck early LBW to put Gordon on the back foot immediately. However, Gordon’s captain and number three was always the big wicket, and showed his intent straight away to shift the momentum. But right as a dangerous partnership began to form, debutant Lewis struck the crucial breakthrough of the Gordon captain with a safe catch to Jack at mid on. Gordon tried to rebuild, however, the Manly boys kept the pressure on, as the skipper Roop entered the attack. From there on, it was essentially the Roop show, as he spun a web taking 6 for 16 off 7.4 overs of high quality leg spin. Nathan Pryke also chimed in with two wickets in a great spell of fast bowling, but the day well and truly belonged to Roop with his all round performance, as he took the final wicket to secure a 151 run victory for Manly and a semi final spot. 

 

The boys take on St George at Hurstville Oval on Tuesday 25th in the semi final. C’mon the Tahs.

After coming off an agonisingly close loss last week against Penrith, Manly were determined for their T20 game against St George-Sutherland at Harold Fraser Reserve. The weather was once again a factor with some rain on the radar, however luckily it stayed away and the game was able to start with no delay.

Mikaela won the toss and elected to bat. Our Openers Nat (9) and Saskia got us off to a great start allowing Mik to come in and play freely throughout the middle overs. Sas and Mik had an incredible partnership of 103 runs, including two magnificent sixes from each player. Mik was dismissed in the 17th over, with a solid knock of 31 off 31 balls. With 2 and a half overs to go Shivani (13*) and Sas were able to put on a quick 38 run partnership to get the total up to promising 162. Sas played a world-class innings with one of the best batting figures in the whole competition, ending up on 98* off just 63 balls. She had a vast selection of shots, including two ramp shots that went for 4, and utilised all areas of the ground.

Manly went into the field with confidence, as Annie and Mik opened up with the ball. Both girls ended up with figures of 1-15 off 4 overs, taking the crucial wickets of St George-Sutherland’s top order. Wickets continued to fall throughout the innings with minimal runs being scored thanks to the superb bowling efforts of Chelsea (2-23) and Sas (3-7). Manly were able to keep St George-Sutherland to 92 after the 20 overs, which is a phenomenal effort against the team at the top of the table.

Overall, it was a great weekend for Manly, as they out-slayed the slayers, moving up into 5th place on the ladder. Looking forward to next week against Gordon with the 50 over format starting up again.

Our final T20 of the year against St George Sutherland started off slowly with some patchy rain delaying the start of play at Harold Fraser Oval. Our captain Nat G won the toss and elected to bat, opening with Niamh B and Charley C. We had a cautious start as the batters settled in and an excellent performance by Niamh (52 off 52) allowed us to accelerate steadily throughout the overs. Great running between the wickets in the last few overs by Ellie J (8 off 9) and Mia W (16 off 11) brought our total up to 6-114, the best total we have posted this T20 season.

With runs in hand we started the second innings with Mia W and Kristie C keeping the Slayers to 1/5 off the first three overs.

Consistent bowling from Kate S, Charley C, Jasmine W, Ellie J and Claire W slowly pushed the Slayers required run rate up to 10 runs/over. Tight bowling by Niamh B (1/8 off 3) and Kristie C (3/18 off 4) to finish off the game secured our second win for the season with St George Sutherland scoring 7-91.

This week Manly Warringah Women’s Third Grade played their final T20 match of the season against Campbelltown-Camden at Raby Park. With Renee Hough as our captain, we won the toss and elected to field first. This decision payed off with multiple early wickets from Sarah Gordon, bowling well to set up the catches, safely taken by our newly recruited debutantes of Michelle Cox and Stacey McManus. Both ex-olympic softballers, Michelle and Stacey continued to shine throughout the first bowling innings with highlights being Michelle’s two wickets in three balls, finishing with excellent figures of 2-11, followed by a brilliant joint run out from the pair in Michelles second over. Both cam Prior and Emily Hatfield also notably produced two outstanding wickets themselves with figures of 2-4 (Emily) and 2-14 (Cam). It was an all-round team effort that produced a brilliant bowling innings that had Campbelltown-Camden at a score of 9-68 by the end of the 20 overs and Manly needing 69 runs to win.

In our batting innings, chasing a total of 69, Michelle Cox and myself opened the batting. Ash hit a nice four before departing with a top edge catch at short square leg. Michelle on the other hand continued her stunning debut with a convincing 30 off 28 balls retired, her innings consisting of many brilliant four heaved over the midwicket region. Emily Hatfield unfortunatley got unlucky with a runout miscommunication, but was back up by captain Renee, who held her ground for a much needed 16 off 40 balls. Annabelle Gilbert came with a quick 6 off 10, that helped keep the run rate on track. Finally, Stacey McManus made a match winning 16 off 14 as a brilliant start to her Manly career. The girls won the match convincingly with a great team effort put in all round, but particular, credit should be given to the pair of softball debutantes who performed outstandingly for their first game of cricket.

On arrival at North Sydney 2 there was a bit of rain around which delayed the start of play 15 minutes and brought us off the field in both innings. Captain Mia Nel won the toss and elected to bat first in our last T20 game of the season. 

Emily Horstead (36) and Maya Nicey (19) opened the batting and got off to a good start with the score at 29 after 6 overs. Unfortunately runs dried up from there and when the first wicket fell in the 13th over the score was 1- 55. From there a few wickets fell before some good running and quick singles saw the score progress to 7- 104 at the end of Manly’s innings. The ‘team-first’ attitude in running between the wickets saw a number of wickets fall but was noted as admirable by the opposition coach.

Unfortunately we started our bowling innings loosely, bowling much shorter than we would have liked and consequently UTS North Sydney were 0- 43 after 9 overs. However at this stage our 3 spinners came on to bowl, and very quickly dried up the runs and picked up wickets. Maya Nicey, bowling superbly, ended up with figures of 2/12 after her 4 overs whilst Eliza Henry finished with a tight 1/9. From there with 2 runouts and another wicket in the 18th over. At the end of their 20 overs we managed to keep UTS North Sydney to 7- 80 and finished with a 24 run win.
