Brewers Brave the Rain to Win the only Contest in Sydney – Weekend Wrap 26th/27th February 2022

Sometimes it’s not what you do on the field that makes the difference, but what you do off it. That’s exactly what happened in today’s Quest Events Play in the Day as our Brewer Shield were the only team, we believe, to get on in any Premier Cricket across Sydney this weekend. Full credit to all the ground staff and volunteers, but especially Brewers coach Dom Wheeler who was the driving force. It led to a fantastic double bonus point victory with skipper Mia Nel and Eliza Henry taking 3 wickets each, then Eliza again and the consistent Emily Horstead getting us home easily with the bat

Seadrift Distillery Female Player of the Week

Eliza Henry

The Seadrift Distillery Women’s Player of the Week for Round 13 is Brewer’s mainstay Eliza Henry. Eliza was a force to be reckoned with on the weekend,  taking 3/4 off her 5 overs. In true all-rounder form, Eliza also destroyed the Universities bowling attack, scoring 22 runs off 19 balls and helping her team to secure a double bonus-point win and a position in the finals. In the words of Brewer Coach Dom Wheeler, “Eliza is an incredible young cricketer – a true triple -threat who can change the game with bat, ball or in the field. It’s a pleasure as a coach to just sit back & watch her go about her business, while her infectious, energetic attitude helps bring the best out of her teammates as well.” Congratulations Eliza, we can’t wait to see what other amazing results your season holds.

In a week of washouts all across the competition, a special mention must be given to Dom and the many parent volunteers who managed to get the game on in the face of such wild and unpredictable weather. Thank you for putting the time and effort into such an amazing display of club spirit.
Brewer Shield

Universities 54 (Henry 3/4, Nel 3/7) def. by Manly-Warringah 2/56 (Horstead 28*)

After torrential rain in Sydney throughout the week, The Manly brewer team arrived at Grahams on Sunday morning to find a pitch that seemed more promising for the ducks than it did for the players. With low expectations for any play the Manly team went out to the Oval and began working on drying the outfield. With great work from the parents, coaches, players and super-soakers, 3 hours later Manly went back into the change room and got ready to play! Mia took to the pitch to commence the toss and a loss resulted in Manly bowling first.
Our openers Jess and Charlotte came on to bowl and in Jess’ first over there was a catch taken by Caitlin at mid-on. This got the manly team up on their feet as an early wicket fell. Charlotte came on as the opposition were struggling to get runs, then in the 3rd over Charlotte bowled a great ball followed by an appeal as the umpire raised his finger, this left the Universities at 2-11. Next bowlers Ellie and Darcey kept the runs tight and in the 9th over Shae took a great catch, the batter leaving the crease at 3-34. Next were the spinners who came into the attack taking some amazing wickets and keeping the runs very tight. The spinners, Eliza and Mia managed to finish the innings gaining 3 wickets each (Eliza 3/4, Mia 3/7). By the end of the innings manly were yet to bat chasing a total of 54.
After a quick turn around our openers Emily and Caitlin came to the crease confidently, hoping to make the runs before the rain came back . Unfortunately, in the 3rd over Caitlin was dismissed. Ellie had a strong start, making two quick singles but unfortunately in the 5th over was bowled.  Eliza came to join Emily out on the pitch as Emily hit two 4’s in a row. The two girls built up a partnership and were able to bring the innings to a finish as Eliza hit a 4. Emily and Eliza ended with a partnership of 44. Emily made a total of 28 runs of 30 balls and Eliza a total of 22 runs of 19 balls.

The Manly team won leaving us in 3rd place on the ladder.
