The Manly Warringah Waratahs are heartbroken with the sudden passing of Anthony Dignan after a short illness.
“Digs” was a huge part of our club in the 1990s before going on to have a successful stint at North Sydney. However, his presence back at Manly over the last few decades has been warmly felt.
Digs was a big character, always telling it how it was, and never backed down from a fight. This has devastated so many in the Waratahs community as his contribution to both Manly and cricket in Sydney was immense.
Across 9 seasons from 1987/88 to 1996/97 he scored 2,558 runs at an average of 22.05. He hit 3 centuries with a highest score of 105 in 1995/96 against Penrith in Round 3. In this match he set a then club record of 178 for the 4th wicket in 2nd Grade with Gaeten Juul as they chased down a formidable 333.
He took 223 catches behind the stumps and affected 32 stumpings. His grace and skill with the gloves were something to be-hold, and he was regarded as one of our finest wicket keepers of his generation.
His funeral will be held on Friday 30th May at St Mary’s Church in Manly at 1pm, followed by a gathering at Manly Bowling Club just next to Manly Oval.
