Women Welcome in the New Year with a Clean Sweep – Weekend Wrap 16/17 Jan 2021

The Manly boys ventured to the picturesque North Sydney oval for the final limited overs fixture of the season. After an incredible come from behind win against Easts, the boys were pumped to continue our strong white ball form and finish the season undefeated. Skipper won the toss and chose to bat on a beautiful looking wicket. Fozz departed early leaving Benny and Jay to get the innings started. The pair batted beautifully, putting on 188 for the second wicket. Jay was dismissed shortly after bringing up his 9th century for the Tahs and Benny soon followed for a well made 75 against his former club. At 3-200 we had a great base to push for a 300+ score but despite solid efforts from Farrell, Beadle & Vumbaca we were unable to get there posting a slightly under par 273.

With 273 on the board, early wickets were going to be key.  Ryan Hadley delivered yet again with the new ball removing the opener and #3 in quick succession. Some tough chances were missed which allowed North’s middle order to capitalise on the very batter friendly conditions. The boys toiled away all afternoon but unfortunately it wasn’t enough as we were outplayed in all departments.

Despite the loss, there were a lot of positives to take into the limited overs quarter final in a few weeks. Finishing in 3rd place we will host Fairfield @Manly on the 7th of Feb, hope to see you all down there.

2nd grade arrived to a beautiful batting strip and a Manly Oval looking in tip top shape, keen to continue the winning form that had seen us go top of the table in recent weeks. After 3 years of losing tosses at rates defying the mathematical understandings he teaches during the week, Andrew “Prof” Jamieson continued to regress to the mean, winning yet another toss. The manly boys were batting first.

Edmund Hole and Matthew Brewster opened up for the Tahs. Both survived some good bowling and were looking good before a mix-up saw Brewster run out through little fault of his own for 9. Joel came and went for what was an imperious 20 (18) before Sully and Ned formed a strong partnership of 99 before losing Ned for a well-made 50. Unfortunately it was the story of our innings where just as a partnership formed we would lose a wicket or two and we would need to consolidate again.

Sully continued to show his class, bringing up 50 and Gainsy just whacked them from the get-go, taking us to 205 in short order before he fell for a run-a-ball 33. Sully went the next over for a quality 63 and all of a sudden 300 seemed a lot further away than it had been a few minutes ago. Jordan and Zach showed good intent to keep things moving against North’s attack before Zach went for a run-a-ball 7 and Skipper Jamieson injected himself in time to take down the spinner. And take them down he did, bombing two sixes into various levels of the pine trees over the fence before being caught for 15 (10). Jordan went soon after for 18 (21) trying to push things along bringing Kneal “THE FINISHER” Prowse to the crease with Josh Seward. The pair played some stylish shots finishing 10 (12) and 7(5) respectively to propel the Manly boys to a total of 267.

With some quality batting in the North’s lineup we knew that even with our attack on that deck it was game on. It’s fair to say that the North’s run chase never really got going, with the combo of Jamieson and Seward making some inroads while also keeping the run rate down. Jamo bowled his 10 straight in a spell of 3-18 that negated any momentum that North’s looked close to getting. Edmund took a probable-catch in the gully that was so sharp it didn’t really matter whether the ball had bounced before or after it hit the bat; a fast edge came, flayed by a frustrated norths bad and was mostly caught by Hicksy who selflessly parried it over to Jordan who hadn’t taken one in a while.

Hicksy came on and was his usual miserly self, although he did bowl one loose ball in his 30 that was quite elegantly dispatched for 4. So it was slightly refreshing to see that the man is human. His 5 overs for 17 combined with THE FINISHER (Kneal) to bowl some crucial overs as Norths tried to put the foot down. Gainsy came on with a trademark maiden and his potty mouth to intimidate a wicket. After a few very tight overs he was eventually hit for a couple of boundaries at which point Jamo gave him a rest, largely in the interests of Gainsy’s blood pressure and the delicate sensibilities of the umpires who had managed to piece together a few of his compliments to the batsmen.

Joel came on, burgling one quite quickly. The earlier bowling had already done the damage though as Norths required over 8 an over for 20odd overs with about 4 wickets in hand. It must be said at this point that a solid partnership formed for Norths, based around Sam Alexander who showed his hours spent with Bobby Rowlands hadn’t gone to waste. He and the tail stuck around until a refreshed Seward came on and removed their number 10 before Joel finally nabbed Samos for a well made 23, caught behind by Brewster.

Overall it was a pretty strong performance, especially in the field where not a chance went down. The bowling quality and depth in particular stifled the run chase before it could get going. The exciting thing is that despite putting on 269 we know as a batting unit that there is definitely still room to improve, especially with the building of big partnerships.

After going down in a close one to Eastern Suburbs last week, Manly’s Third Grade side were eager to bounce back against the Bears this weekend. With North Sydney sitting in second spot it was going to be a crucial game for both sides looking to solidify a top 6 position.

Skipper Sammy Hole won the toss and elected to bat on a good cricket wicket that looked like it might do a little early for the bowlers and then slow up throughout the day. Max (28) and Sam (27) got Manly off to a great start, seeing off the new ball and falling just short of a 50 run partnership when Max was dismissed to a good catch. S.Webber and Wheeler (63) then steadied the ship for the Tahs with Schwebbs rotating the strike well and Wheeler finding the boundary with some terrific stroke play. A resounding sweep for 6 the pick of the bunch. 

Sam then unluckily chopped on to his stumps from the leg-spinner which left the Tahs at 2-118, allowing for the return of Tim Doonan. After some time away from the game Doons (31) was seeing the ball like he had never left. Taking advantage of some short bowling from the Bears and dispatching them through the offside boundary. The pair managed to take the innings deep towards the final overs and were eventually dismissed back to back with the score at 4-173. 

The platform allowed Manly to attempt to back end a big total on a wicket that was becoming increasingly difficult to score. Charles (26*) and Skipper Hole (14) got the Tahs past the 200 mark thanks to a maximum from the Skipper — a booming pull shot that sent the ball like a tracer bullet over the leg-side boundary. Some late hitting from Charlesy and the tail saw Manly finish on 6-229, a score well above par given the slow conditions.
After analysing where the North Sydney bowling attack went wrong, the skipper led out his side with some clear plans as to how we would go about defending our total. 

Wigney and Counsell (3-15) opened up with the new ball as the Bears were looking to play some aggressive drives early. Counsell got us off to the perfect start, dismissing the left-handed opener LBW with his very first ball. Bishop-Perrett (2-21) then came on at first change and managed to grab a couple of wickets, firstly thanks to a tough catch from Wiggers at mid-on. Secondly, a screamer to a horizontal Doons at second slip got the Tahs well and truly underway with the bears at 3-24.
Lach Trewartha (3-38) and Bain were brought on after drinks and really managed to tie the bears down. A sharp stumping from Schwebbs off Trewartha got the next break through. Doonan then continued his superhuman effort in the field, two direct hit runouts and another sharp catch restricted North Sydney to 7-67. 

Big Mick Counsell then came back to finish the job he started, removing the fighting tail in his 9th over to pick up 3-fa and dismiss North Sydney for 125.

All in all a great performance from the Tahs, executing plans perfectly in all stages of the match allowing for a bonus point win.

Manly turned up to Graham’s greeted with an absolute flatty. North’s won the toss and without hesitation chose to bat first. 

The lads started of really well with good lines and lengths but to north Sydneys credit their openers went pongo. 0-100 odd at drinks they looked like putting on 300 + at one point. Spin started to dry up the runs with Adam Parkinson(2), Josh cooper and Adam Gummer(1) bowling superbly. But the man of the hour was Michael Visser. Putting on an absolute clinic taking a one handed hanger caught and bowled then proceeding to take another four in the death to secure the bag. Well done Viss. 

Glyn Archer and Jack Hobson also grabbed 1 each in the death. To bowl them out for 250 was a great effort after their blistering start.  

Adam Gummer and Jack Melchiore started off proceedings with the bat getting the boys off to a fairly decent start needing 5 an over. Jack fell quickly then Adam the next over. Oscar Lucious and Alec Duly batted really well to get the boys back in it. Oscar falling for 26. A partnership was needed badly and the boys answered. Duly (58) and Michael Visser(53) got the boys right back in it taking as deep as possible for they needed to up the anti. Enter will Will Akhurst. .6446 was His first 5 balls. Needing 9 and over Will gave us a real chance at the end taking the run rate down to 7s. Unfortunately wickets fell quick but the boys gave it a redhot dip.

Manly 5th grade arrived at Tunks Park keen to bounce back after last weeks disappointing loss. We were fielding an incredibly strong team with many of the boys returning from 4th grade and even Boults from 3rd grade. It was shaping up as quite a close contest between bat and ball as both teams were situated similarly on the ladder. Tunks was known as one of the best lower grade grounds with an incredible groundskeeper who had once again produced a fabulous hard wicket for the upcoming contest. With Gainsey’s assistance we completed some fielding drills before Rochie won the toss and chose to bat first.

Our new opening combination of Reiley and Keelan got us off to an excellent start with an opening partnership of 63 before Keelan’s caught behind dismissal. From there, it wasn’t pretty viewing from a Manly perspective as we lost the next 6 wickets for 26 runs to end up at 6-89. Then enter, Evan Dunnachie. He partnered with ex 1st grader Scott Patterson to show what the Manly batting line up was made of. Evan was launching sixes over the side screen for fun finishing up on 52. He was well supported by Scotty who showed his charismatic stroke play to end up on 36. From there, the tail finished the innings up to take us to a competitive 194. 

After last weeks shocking fielding performance, Rochie gave us a chat about effort in the field and the fact that we had to take the 10 chances to win because we would create that many. Rochie and Evan took the new ball and bowled excellent areas keeping the scoring low. The openers from North Sydney couldn’t find anything except the edges of their bats which Rochie summed up by saying “Atleast this bloke doesn’t need to knock in the middle of his bat.” Evan was rewarded with a wicket finishing 1-16 off his 8 overs,  while Rochie applied the pressure from the other end finishing with 0-10 off his 4 overs. Ollie Melville was introduced and bowled good line and length with 0–10 off his 3 overs. Liam bowled his tight spots and was hard to hit producing constant pressure from one end. His finger to produce a run out of a ball hit straight back was just the opening that we needed. Enter the main man of the day, Roop Dhillon. He bowled good line and lengths before dismissing their number 4 to a caught behind. He provided a spell of mystery as the opposition batsmen were struggling to read him. He took 2 LBWs and 2 more wickets courtesy catches to Evan and Ollie on the boundary beating the batsmen for flight. He finished an excellent spell taking 5-27 off his 10 overs and really breaking open the game for Manly. Liam was rewarded with a wicket for his tight pressure from the other end finishing with 1-16 off his 8 overs with 3 maidens included. Raja was brought on after Liam and continued to bowl tight lines for his 2 overs finishing with 2-1. Reiley should not be forgotten with his excellent keeping and appealing allowing for dismissals to occur throughout our innings with 3 dismissals for him. The entire bowling group  bowled exceptionally well and there was no easy link, constant line and length bowling made it hard for North Sydney to score and sucked them into bad shot making resulting in the innings ending for 83 all out.

In the end it was a fantastic day, highlighted by some key contributions and overall outstanding effort in the field. We move up the ladder with an excellent bonus point win and cannot wait for next round against Blacktown at home.

The W3 girls were pumped and ready to start a new season of 40 over games after the Covid-Xmas break. The Tahs were taking on UTS North Sydney Bears at a sunny Tunks 2.

Our opening batswomen were Mia Nel and Sarah Gordon. Sarah was the first to fall, bringing Steph Hughes to the crease. Steph and Mia’s partnership brought us up to 47 runs before Steph was caught out. The next batsperson was Renee Hough, who with Mia created a partnership made in heaven, with some great running and countless 4s between the pair of them. Mia retired first with 50 runs, which brought in batslady Jess Kaye who faced a few balls only to have Renee retire with her 50 runs soon after. Abby Taylor joined Jess at the crease. Jess was bowled bringing out our next batsgal Emma Lyon. Abby was dismissed followed by batskipper Olivia Hough in quick succession, bringing Sallie Molyneux into bat. After the pair got some good singles, Emma was bowled out and batsgirl Jasmin Wilson came in to bat. A brief appearance from Jas, and Cam Pryor was next to bat. Sadly no new partnership was able to form as Sallie was soon caught out, which brought back in our batsprincess Mia. They shared a few balls together before CP was bowled out on the second last ball, bringing in our batsqueen Renee to face the last ball. We finished our innings off with 199 runs.

After a quick warm up and some sunscreen reapplication, Liv opened the bowling giving the Manly girls a good start. Manly’s first wicket was bowled by Sallie, which seemed to start something as Mia bowled the next wicket in the very next over. After 5 brilliant overs by Sallie, a rogue ball from the Bears’ bat ricocheted into her forehead. That’s not the way we want you to use your head Sallie! (we hope you recover quickly) Our next wickets were 8 overs later when Jas got 2 in a row, first caught by Renee and the second was caught behind by our star keeper Steph. It looked like the Bears’ batting order was set to collapse. CP had some great overs which helped keep the Bears’ runs well down. They still had a long way to go to reach Manly’s score. On the 26th over Mia got a well deserved LBW. The very next over Jess bowled a ball perfectly placed (and perfectly paced) to hit the stumps, and on her next over she got another wicket with help from Steph catching behind the stumps. The batting order crumbled when Renee got 2 LBWs. Rookie Helen Hull had a go bowling but decided to leave it to the experts, and Jess cleaned it all up on the first ball of the 35th over. The Manly ladies won the day as the Bears were all out for 146.

Freshly appointed captain Isaiah Vumbaca won the toss at Manly and chose to bat.  The lads got off to a good start with Brewster timing the ball well of the quicks, getting a quick fire 35 at the top of the order. A couple of quick wickets and the Tahs were 2-70 after 12 overs. Joel and Jacob both batted well and began to build a partnership, putting the bad ball away and hitting the sweepers for ones. Both fell quickly to good balls, leaving us 4-130.  The last few wickets fell quickly, except for a vital 20 run last wicket partnership with Ollie Melville hitting a clutch 19*. We scraped our way to 179.

Josh Seward and Evan opened the bowling, both bowled exceptionally well and opened up the game for us, with Seward taking 2 early wickets. Jacob and Joel followed and continued with the standard set, with O’Sullivan reaping the rewards of a consistent length and line, taking 3/30. Lachie Trewartha also bowled outstandingly taking an important 2/12 off of his 6 overs. All in all, a great bowling display and fighting win that has given us momentum going into finals.

The Manly girls turned up to Howard Frazer oval for a T20 match against St George Sutherland to follow up Brewers tight win. Captain Mikaela lost the toss and we were sent in to bat with Zara and Charlie opening. We got off to a slow start with Charlie being run out on a risky single just shy of double digits. Mikaela then came in to bat and created a nice 61 run partnership with Zara. Approaching the final few overs we started to tee off as Zara was bowled for 28 and Mikaela caught on 49. The innings was finished off beautifully by Kristie and Kate who ran the quick singles and took the team to a total of 5/108 after the twenty overs.

With the hard wicket and fast outfield we knew this would be a tough score to defend, however with tight bowling by Annie (0/17 off 2), Mia (0/4 off 2) and Charlie and sharp fielding we kept then to 11 after 4 overs. Unfortunately we struggled to get a wicket while the opening pair began to get their eye in. Mikaela then got the break though wicket, caught by Kristy at cover, in the ninth over, but the Slayers continued to match the run rate, increasing the pressure as the game wore on. Tight bowling in the last few overs by Charlie (0/21 off 4) and Kate (1/13 off 4) brought the game back into our hands with St George requiring 8 rounds off the last overs to win. With the field pushed out we headed into the last over with Mikaela (3/13 off 4) bowling and found ourselves with a double wicket maiden to finish off the game with a good win.

Early start for the Brewers girls out in Sutherland this weekend after a well-deserved break over Christmas. A tough game was ahead of us but with skipper Nat winning the toss and electing to bowl first eased the pre-game nerves for all the girls.

Chelsea and Kate opened the bowling nicely with Chelsea taking a wicket in the first over to ease the tension. Just as their next batting partnership was building Jess Manning cleanly bowled their other opening batter. It is safe to say our fielding wasn’t up to the usual standard. There were plenty of misfields, a couple dropped catches, and a few missed run out opportunities throughout the innings. Although not all was bad, Chelsea with a catch off Ellie’s bowling quickly sent their top scoring batter back into the sheds. As the innings slowed down, Ellie got 2 more needed quick wickets leaving her with some great figures of 3/7 off 3. Not long after that did the wickets keep coming leaving Sutherland 9-94 off the 20 overs. 

After a short break and some very quick throwdowns, openers Nat and Chloe went to the crease. After unfortunately losing Chloe early, Ellie was sent to the middle. Another two quick wickets sent Nat and Kate back to the sheds. Ellie and Eliza then built a solid partnership which led us in the right direction. Eliza (19) was then dismissed as the chase was getting tighter. Unfortunately, Jess, Gemma and Emily were all dismissed for low scores shortly after. With Ellie still in there was still hope. It came down to the last over when Chelsea, assisted by Ellie scored the winning runs. Outstanding innings from Ellie finishing on 40*. 

Into the sheds to sing the song as we celebrated our first win for the second half of the season. Overall a good effort today by all girls, looking to improve even more as the season goes on.
