Horley and Du Preez get the Champagne Flowing to kick off February – Weekend Wrap 5th/6th February 2022

Given the recent weather we were presented a promising day at Manly Oval with a full day of cricket likely to be had. Lenton won the toss and elected to bowl first on a pitch that looked to possibly offer some assistance early on.

Hadley & M Edwards opened the bowling and Parramatta started well with the first wicket falling at 62 runs. Hackney anchored the innings however, wickets continued to fall on a regular basis with them being 6 for 120. Carden was on form picking up 3 quick wickets to put Parramatta under huge pressure, finishing of with figures of 3 for 23 of 8 overs. Parramatta managed to scratch through to a respectable total of 217 runs, giving the manly boys a challenging total to chase. A special mentioned to West for picking up 3 wickets, J Edwards with 2 & Beadle with an outstanding run out.

The Manly boys started a little rough with loosing Beadle just after 9 runs. However, J Edwards & Lenton steadied the ship with Jack scoring 37 and Lenton with 64. With Manly poised at a tricky position with 5-145 there was a game that could swing either way. However, everyone batting from 5 and lower chipped in with vital runs to keep a win within sight. The game was tense at the least with all spectators and players intensely watching each ball with approximately 6 runs needed of the last over. 2 needed of the last ball with Carden at strike, continuing his reliable form he dispatched it for 4 runs giving the boys a win! A special mentioned to Hadleys (the don) 26 of 18 under immense pressure.

After a good run of late, the 2’s boys arrived at Old Kings to take on Parramatta in a look to keep the good times rolling.

With the return of rep players and COVID isolation finishing, the side was vastly different to the week before, however the beauty of 2’s in the last few years is the way the boys have adapted to the task at hand and got on with it no fuss.

A good toss to lose saw Parramatta batting first on a good looking wicket but weather conditions making it tricky for both sides.

Bowling up top was solid with Seward and Jamieson doing some damage early. The Parra boys dug in but tight bowling never let them get away and Josh Wigney with a fantastic 10 overs straight took 4/32. Backed nicely by Seward 3/34 and Jamieson 2/30 the boys were able to keep Parra to 163. By no means our best display with the ball and in the field but getting it done non the less.

Setting about the chase was slow going, chipping in with starts were Brewster, Bryant and O’Sullivan, but ultimately couldn’t get flowing the way they would have liked. Merchant unlucky for the second week in a row with a bad call left Gainsford and Weston at the crease. In a position not familiar to him over the last few years Logan batted aggressively and clinically to stand undefeated on 59* when the winning runs were hit. With the pressure on Logan and Gainsford (38*) batted well together and made what was threatening to be a tricky chase very manageable. Credit to both boys for the way they saw that home.

A solid win and another nice piece of momentum looking to Gordon at Chatswood next week.

The 3s boys returned to Grahams with a strengthened side back from 2s and covid isolations. We needed a good win to gain some momentum coming into the business end of the season.

Sam Hole lost the toss and we were batting. We started off really well with Lachie Coyte (79) and Skipper Sam. We were 2-124 off 30 overs looking for the middle order to go on and post 230+. Unfortunately no one really got going and we ended up 9-200 off our 50 overs.

We knew that it was below what we wanted but definitely defendable with our bowling attack.

Unfortunately our first spells from each bowler were not great and Parramatta were cruising at 1-112. Roop Dhillon came on and turned the game back towards the Manly boys with a brilliant spell (4/33). A quick period and Parra were reeling at 5-117. Game back on. A couple more wickets with some runs in between pushed the game to 7-190 with a hand full of overs to go. With the  game on the line superstar Ellis Raymond threw the stumps down from point with Parra needing 4 runs to win and 2 overs to go!! He then bowled the second last over that went for 2.

2 required of the last over for Parra, 1 wicket for the Manly boys. Neal Prowse was thrown the ball and managed to bowl 4 dot balls to the number 11. Unfortunately the second last ball was sky’d and Skipper Sam Hole bolted full pace and the ball just plugged out of reach.

Not the best game with bat or ball from us but definitely a tight one we’ll never forget. Onwards and upwards!

5’s went into a overcast day with a belter of a side looking to turn around the loss from the previous week. Skipper started well winning the toss on a typical Mike Pawley wicket and chose to bowl first.

Lawson took a couple early poles in his first over to put the visitors on the back foot with a couple catches behind the wicket. The visitors then lost another couple of wickets put the Tahs in a good position with Parra 4-29. After a strong partnership, a lucky run out from Lawson broke the crucial partnership, allowing Melville and Bush to rip through the rest with the ball. Melville ending with 3-35 and Bush & Lawson sharing 2 each. Setting 171 to win.

After a early wicket, a solid partnership by Melchiore and Dunlop putting just under 50 runs for the second wicket partnership at 2-61.  After a slump of 5 for 23. The remaining 87 runs seemed an almost impossible task. The master finisher Waddington came to the crease. Taking his time with the bat working his way into the innings beginning to set up a solid partnership with Bush with both pushing the score along to 122 before the next FOW. The composure and calmness was brilliant to watch from the sideline as the easy hitting to the gaps and taking full advantage of the bad ball came into play. Cumming came to the crease to provide the main role of rotating the strike and that he did. Both Waddington and Cumming pushing the total across the line with a fitting boundary to finish the inning with 4 overs to spare. Waddo 46* and Cumming 24* the stars of the show.

Brilliant performance and ready to roll into working for a finals spot.

Coming off the back of two wins, we were back at our home ground of Manly Oval against a Universities team that had inclusions of WBBL and WNCL players. The weather was holding, and strong ocean breeze was present.

We won the toss and elected to bat. Zara Shipp (15) and Saskia Horley opened the batting and created a great platform with the first wicket falling with score 1 for 69. A classy partnership of 75 runs between Shivani Mehta (38 runs) and Saskia displayed stylish strokes to find the boundary on multiple occasions. Not only did they find the boundary but picked up several quick singles to keep the scoreboard ticking. Then came Niamh Bullen (37 runs) supporting Saskia with an 84-run partnership including a last ball six down the ground. The highlight of the batting innings was Saskia Horley gaining a consecutive ton with the red ink next to her name, a history making 129*.

Annie Hutt and Chelsea Mclerie opened the bowling, limiting the runs scored off the bat during the powerplay overs. The rain kept making an appearance changing the bowling conditions and moisture levels. Although Saskia had not finished her work for the day coming in with right arm off spin to take out our first wicket, a key to the Universities batting line up. Saskia went on to take 3 for 15 off her 9 overs. Bowling in partnership at the other end, Kristie Crawford tied down the run rate with consistent line and length bowling, for her 7 overs straight she took 2 for 13 including two maiden overs and the second key wicket. To tidy up our bowling innings Charley Camburn was consistently challenging the bat taking 3 for 14 off 6 overs.  

Overall, a fantastic effort from multiple players contributing with both the bat and ball and a standout Champagne cricketer, Saskia. The win including the bonus point takes the Manly 1st grade girls to second on the ladder.

After coming away with two consecutive wins, Womens 2’s were determined to get another against Universities. With skipper Nat winning the toss we went in to bat on a slow outfield. Openers Nat (56) and Steph (16) got off to a steady start with 44 runs before the first wicket fell. Not long after two quick wickets fell and Chloe (34) joined the crease with Nat. A great partnership between Nat and Chloe set us up for a defendable total. A few more wickets fell and our lower order batters persisted to get the runs we needed. However, at the end of the innings we were all out for 170 in the 46th over. Congratulations to Nat for her great innings. 

Michelle (1/26) and Kate (3/24) opened the bowling well with the first breakthrough in the 4th over. A partnership started to form for Uni’s and we were in need of another wicket. A couple of bowling changes and close calls and still no wickets. In the 24th over we made our second breakthrough with a catch by Ellen which was closely followed by a run out by Michelle and Steph. By the 26th over Uni’s were 4 down. Some tight bowling from Jaz (1/19) and Chloe (1/23) slowed down the run rate and was rewarded with wickets. With only a handful of wickets left to take, the game started to get close however, Stacey (3/19) came to the crease and troubled the bowlers coming away with three wickets and getting the winning wicket in the 45th over. 

Another great effort from the 2’s this week and looking to keep this momentum going into next week.

What a day it was for the women’s 3^rd grade team this week.

Forecast wasn’t looking great leading up to the weekend, but hey, when is the forecast even right these days? It didn’t rain.

We rocked up to Balgowlah oval excited to keep up the momentum from last week and have 3 on the trot. Captain courageous won the toss and we had a bat. Coming off some fine form from the week before, Emma Lyon opened the batting with the veteran opener, Ash Karcher. Unfortunately, Ash’s stay was short lived getting caught for 2. The Hat (Em) came in next and would stay till the end. Em was helping out Emma at the other end, running the singles (boundaries were a rarity the whole day due to the lack of mowing skills from the Northern Beaches Council <3) and rotating the strike. Emma had to go at 24, bringing in the captain, Renee Hough. For the rest of the innings it was the Marnus and Steve Smith show, sorry the Em and Renee show. They played what was a brilliant display of skill, patience and class with the bat. There were quite a few sundries which made it tough at times to get some runs but the girls stuck it out and batting through the overs getting us to a defendable 132 runs off our 40 overs, finishing on 40* and 41* respectively. 

We knew we were going to have to bowl well and keep it tight, bowling as little sundries as possible. CP opened the bowling, collecting her first wicket in the first over when they forced the opener to snick off to the trusty gloves of Ash. The second over brought a similar occurrence with Sallie doing the same thing and making Universities 2 for not many after 2. After a few tight overs from CP, Sarah Gordon came into the attack and quite literally sent the bails flying and knocking over middle stump to send the next one walking. The next wicket was a run out, brilliant fielding by Emma Lyon at fine leg to whip it in to Ash again and run out the batter. 4 down, 5 to go (I’m not bad at maths, they only had 10). Sallie bowled the next one, bringing the 5^th wicket. 5/9 they were at this point. Keeping the foot on the throttle, Annabelle Gilbert bowled the next batter which brought her first ever wicket for manly, very well deserved after all her hard work on and off the field. Sarah kept up her awesome bowling and collected 2 more wickets, caught and LBW. CP finished their innings with a great rock knocking the batter over. A brilliant display of bowling all round, restricting Uni’s to only 35.

Today the Manly Brewers team arrived at Grahams ready to face third on the ladder, Parramatta in a 50 over game. Captain Mia Nel won the toss and elected to bat. It was nice to welcome back two experienced Manly players in Gemma Lacey and Abbey Melville.
We lost a couple of early wickets before putting together a couple of partnerships featuring Eliza Henry who scored a tremendous 42 runs. Eliza was our top run-scorer for the day, well done Eliza!! While others like Mia Nel (17) and Brooke Frew (19) came in and contributed with good batting displays. Jessica Manning (21) and Gemma Lacey (13) were also able to establish a good partnership and get us through the back half of the innings getting us to a total of 148 runs from 46 overs.
We started the next innings strongly with amazing bowling by Charlotte Ambler guaranteeing the first wicket of the innings. With outstanding fielding from the side, including 2 incredible catches from Eliza, and one each from Mia Nel, Shae Hiskett-Jones and Gemma Lacey, we were able to remove the top order. Caitlin Du Preez came on and bowled a phenomenal 10 overs clean sweeping the middle order, with a marvellous 5 fa as well as a direct hit run out in the field. Big congratulations and well done to Caitlin!! This fantastic effort from the Manly Brewers team allowed them a massive victory, well-done girls.
